McConnell, was first known as North Edgar until a name change about 1880 to the surname of a railroad official. McConnell covers the area about two and one-half miles east of the Martin-Fulton Highway, and is bounded on the East by Ruthville and on the West by Highway 45. This area was first in the 22nd Civil District of Weakley County and after 1853 it became the 16th Civil District of Obion County.

Willie Polk received the first recorded land grant of 5,000 acres; the deed is recorded in Deed A and B (1823) pgs 321 as being made 26 Nov 1830, Raleigh NC.

W. S. Scott paid 3 dollars an acre for land in 1856 and designated in his will that a certain tract be used for a town. In 1870, the Illinois Central railroad was built through the area and McConnell became a shipping point for cattle. Surnames of some first settlers include: Scott, Caldwell, Jones, Turner, Verhine, Gammon, Muckel and Davis.

In 1885: The Cook family; Then: Hasting, Moss, Grant Wilson, Vowell, Parrish, Welch, Long, Looney, Jordan, Day and French families. Dr. Scott began practicing here in 1880 and other doctors were Dave Turner and J. A. Howard of Greenfield. Mrs. Howard (Blanche) taught music.

The Methodist Church building, destroyed in the 1920’s, was never rebuild. The Baptist Church was organized in 1904 and the McConnell Church of Christ, formerly Mt. Vernon Church, moved to McConnell in 1906. In 1981 Mildred Cook Parrish and Anna Lou Caldwell represented the 4th generation to worship with this congregation.

    Is she a relation to the Caldwell of this tiny area?

    Did John Horton and/or his brother George live in this area or north or McConnell in or closer to Fulton?
