Kenton was once known as Andalusia PO and is on the Obion/Gibson county line with most of the business district in Obion and much of the residential area in Gibson County. The original town site was surveyed prior to 1858 about the time the M&O Railroad was being constructed and laid out on 40 acres of land belonging to J. R. MOORE.

The Post Office, established May 27, 1852 in the area was in Gibson County in the vicinity of Kenton and called Andalusia. Harvey HECKLEY was the first postmaster. On March 18, 1859 this post office was moved to Kenton in Obion County.

Kenton was incorporated in 1874 and W. C. PHARR was the first mayor. Four year later, 1878, Kenton Academy was established and among the first teachers were Prof. Hayes, Decker, Hodges, Roberts and Miss Donna Brooks.

Kenton is known as “Home of the White Squirrel.” Legend says that many ago two white squirrels were released by a gypsy traveling through Kenton. These solid-white albino squirrels are beautiful and have multiplied into the enormous number seen playing in the yards and trees of Kenton today.
