HomeCunningham Cemetery

Also known as – Stones Ferry Cemetery

Many thanks to “Joyce Caughron Rhodes” <jmrhodes (at) usit.net> and Carol Caughron Mittag who found this cemetery. While recording the Long Cemetery, further South on the same Bluff Road they found another cemetery. Some of the tombstones were too badly worn to be read and too much earth and brush covered some of the graves. This cemetery appeared to have been abandoned, but they did find a few with more current dates. They asked an elderly lady, later, if she knew the name of the cemetery, since her father was buried there, but she said she didn’t think it had a name.

After researching the death records, “Cunningham Cemetery” is recorded as the burial place on some of the death certificates.

  1. The Abbington Family cemetery has finally been located. Sits on a hill (known as Abbington Hill) on west side of D. Crockett Rd. Directions—Red McCorkle RD south until it T’s into the J jacobs Rd, turn left , first rd to the right. Sones are in a clump of trees on west side of the road. Cemetery location was south of the trees.

  2. I got a letter from a lady from 411 E. Almond Dr. Washington, Il 61571-3244 that informed me that she had a sister buried in the Cunningham cemetery. Her sister name was Virginia, she was 13 months old was also born in that area, but she gave us no last name.—————That is a large cemetery that should have been better taken care of, the gaskets are becoming visible and the tomb stones have been destroyed.
