Campground Cemetery #3: Across dirt road from main plot. Wooded ridge dotted with graves in no particular order. Old residents say these are colored graves. Metal funeral home markers were: Fox, Wells, Lane, Barber, Westmoreland, Porter, Taylor, Harbor, Odonley, Cob.

Cumberland Presbyterian Church at Campground was organized in 1830. Some of the members were Wm. McCullom and wife, Wilford Farris, Sr., Wm. Pickard and wife, Sam Sampson and wife, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Walls and Mr. Farris. This is supposedly the location of the first church in Obion County. Rev. Jack Ward (1860-1881), Rev. John A Dunlap, J. N. Bryson, J. G. Braley, George McIlwaine and John A. McIlwaine. Church records show the following to have made profession of religions: James Harper, E. D. Farris, R. H. Marshall and the elder Garrison.

Obion County History, Vol. 1; p. 434 it is written that a Methodist Church was organized in 1830 in the home of William Mitchell Wilson and his wife Rebecca with 7 charter members. Rebecca was the daughter of Thomas and Lucy Lawson Wilson and first cousin of her husband, William. In early 1823 William and Rebecca settled on a portion of the 4800 acre land grant and April 6, 1823 their son, Thomas D. Wilson was born, the first white child in what would soon be Obion County. Col. Wilson’s home was also scene of the organization of the county and court met there until the courthouse was built. Col. Wilson donated 14 acres for a church and cemetery which has been known as Campground for many years. He died in 1837 and Rebecca in 1885; both are buried at Campground.

Campground Cemeteries — 2 Comments

  1. Dear sirs; My Mother Patricia Overcast Falcon passed some months back and as her last wish wanted to be cremated and buried in her Fathers(my Grandfather) grave.Grandpa was buried in “New Campground Cemetary Teot (Obion County) Tn on June 17th 1991 at age 88. His grave I.S # is 98905842. Our dilemma is we cannot find anyone to help us start this process. There is no phone # for Cemetary listed, and I do not know if Cumberland Presbyterian Church could help us. Can you please give us some information as to the steps necessary to complete this process, as well as someone we can speak with at a Church or County Hall. We are at a loss as to how to proceed to fulfill my Mothers last wishes. Thank you for your time Joel Ely Falcon
