THE
REV. JEREMIAH PARKER BELLAMY
DATE OF DEATH - SEPTEMBER 19, 1880
MONTGOMERY COUNTY, TN
A GOOD MAN TRANSLATED FROM EARTH TO GLORY
Rev. J. P. Bellamy, the last one of the old lights in Wiley's Chapel, was
called from labor to refreshement at high twelve on
Sunday, the 19th of September, at his residence in Montgomery County,
Tenn. He was born May 23, 1798 and was 82 years, 3 months and 27
days. He professed religion in 1819, in the town of Charlotte, Tenn, and was admitted into the church and appointed
class-leader that year. He was licensed to preach at the conference held
near Hopkinsville, in 1825. He and the lamented F.E. Pitts were examined
together and both licensed to preach at that conference. He was 61 years
a member of the M.E. Church and 55 years a preacher of the gospel. When
my appointment was read out for Blooming Grove Circuit at the conference of
1877, being a total stranger in this county, I asked my presiding Elder, Bro.
Burr, to give me the name of some prominent member that I could write to and he
gave me the name of Rev. J.P. Bellamy, informing me that he was a local
preacher on my circuit. I wrote to him and in a few days got an answer
that encouraged me greatly; and on my arrival I found him to be the best friend
a poor circuit-rider could have---always ready to counsel and help in every
way, and though 80 odd years old, still ready to preach. I do not think I
ever knew a man that prayed more in public with such power as he. He
prayed to cease at once to work and live and up to within three or four days of
his death, filled the pulpit at Salem, and on the morning of his death, he
fixed to start to a meeting 8 miles off, but was dissuaded by his daughter.
About 11 o'clock he got very happy and praised God aloud, until nearly 12; and
even a half minute before his death, he sat up on the edge of his bed; but
said: "I believe I am dying" and laid down and ceased to breathe in a
few seconds, without a struggle. Indeed, it was not like dying, it was more like going to sleep and waking up in a
new world. (Transcription from R.P.Gannaway).
Rev. Bellamy's gravesite cannot be located. He was the son of Elisha
Bellamy. His wife was Elizabeth Narcissa Given.

late Dr. John H. Marable, and wife of Thos. Y.
Dixon. Aged 25 years, 11 months, and 11 days.
"Death loves a shining mark", and ere time's blast had faded one
bright tint, His remoresless hand snatched from us a
fair as a flower as ever bloomed on earth; but only to be transplanted to that
sun-bright clime and here His blighting touch is felt no more, where sighs and
tears are never known, and bliss eternal reigns.
Young, gentle, and affectionate, she was beloved by all who knew her, and left
many warm friends to mourn her untimely end.
"Her thought did heavenward roam till, like links of gold, they drew her
up to her bright home within the Savior's fold."
Cora T. Dixon was a devoted wife, affectionate daughter and sister, and a kind friend. May God in His mercy bind
up their broken hearts and enable the bereaved husband and aged mother to bear
their great loss with Christian fortitude and resignation.
She was precious to their souls, dear as life itself could be, knew that better
world, sorrow she shall never see. Was she lovely? Fairer far is
her angel beauty now. OH!What
perfect blessedness beameth on her brow.
Then mourn no more, for God is just, offend Him not by murmuring sighs, Oh! put in Him your holy trust and ye shall meet beyond the
skies.
