Diagram of Burials

Names were transcribed here for location only. Graves were not all in straight lines, but this is a fairly good representation of proximity. James Hill Pickens stated that some farm hands (slaves?) were buried along the far east side, separate from the family, and had no permanent markers.

Notes:

*** #36,  #37 and #38 are large stone slabs, about 3′ by 6′ laid into the ground. We believe these may be the first burials in the cemetery, and that they possibly mark the graves of William who died 1835, his wife Jane (?HAMILTON) PICKENS who died 1839, and their son David, who died in 1813. It is quite likely that David was the first to be buried here, and his parents buried at his side. Their position and proximity to each other, and the fact that they are identical stones, seems to support this theory.

Additionally, we find immediately to the north of these three unmarked stones, the headstones of Zedock R. PICKENS (#35) and Hannah C. O. PICKENS (#34) chronologically the next persons to be buried in the cemetery+ (see list attached). The stones are identical to those marked as #36, #37, and #38, with the exception that those of Hannah and Zedock have inscriptions that are still legible. We were unable to determine if #36, #37, and #38 ever had any engraving on them. Possibly at that early time there was no one living locally that had the necessary skills.

The remainder of the graves in the cemetery radiate out from these centrally located graves. Family members are buried to the west, and what we believe to be graves of farm workers, share croppers, and slaves are buried to the east (rows 8 – 9). This last statement is supported by the fact that most of the graves to the east have no stones at all, or some small head and footstones, with no inscriptions. Hill Pickens was told by his father, Hamilton PICKENS, that the graves along the east side of the cemetery were those of farm workers.

[+  grave #53 has a date that MAY be 1821 – making it one of the earlier burials. It may not be a family member, as it is on the east side of the cemetery.]

Given all the above facts, and observing how family relationships were maintained fairly consistently as to proximity when buried, we believe that graves #36, #37, and #38 are indeed the graves of William, Jane, and David PICKENS.
