Endsley Family Files

John Lee Endsley

Image 1 of 2

John Lee Endsley was the youngest child of James Burgess & Mary Amna (Bell) Endsley. // He married Jessie Lee Hazlett. (not Haslip as many sources often confuse the surname with). There were and still are a whole bunch of Hazletts and Haslips mainly in SE Marshall County and adjacent sections of Bedford and Lincoln Counties. // contributed by Dick Wood, December 2004

A photo of Charles Ross Endsley, Sr., was included in the old Marshall County TNGenWeb family files, but it is not in the archived material today.  Charles Ross Endsley, Sr. was the next-to-youngest son of James Burgess & Mary Amna (Bell) Endsley. He married Ethel May McQuiddy. The photo was contributed by Dick Wood in December, 2004.

Volume No. 4, Page No. 607

Names: W. L. Endsley & Miss Ethel Chapman

Bond: Twelve Hundred and Fifty Dollar Marriage Bond signed 6 Mar 1899 By W. L. Endsley, Principal and H. B. Leonard, Surety

License: Solemnized by  Date:

W. L. Endsley was Walton L. Endsley (1877-1960), son of John F. Endsley & wife, Sallie Adney Coffey. Ethel Chapman was the daughter of James William Chapman & wife, Martha Emmaline Pylant.

The license and the section where the minister or justice of the peace certifies that he has solemnized the rite of matrimony is blank. Usually, if the marriage did not take place, the court clerks would eventually write some type of notation in this block such as “no return” or “not returned.” In this instance other evidence indicates that the marriage did take place: Ethel’s tombstone at Round Hill Cemetery is reported to read: “Ethel Wife of W. L. Endsley Born July 21, 1879 Died August 10, 1901”

(Tombstone Inscriptions of Marshall County, Tennessee, Vol. I compiled by Ralph D. Whitesell, Lewisburg, Tennessee, 1968; Published by Miss Deane Porch, Nashville, Tennessee). They are enumerated in the 1900 Census of Marshall County, Tenn. as husband and wife and son, Willie, 1-month old. (NA Series T663, Roll 1587, page 57.
