James B. “Doodle” Hughes, Sr., 76, retired employee of Occidental and resident of Hilltop Drive in Columbia, died Wednesday, February 16, 2011 at Maury Regional Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, February 19 at Oakes and Nichols Funeral Home with Rev. Keith Sherwood officiating. Burial followed in Polk Memorial Gardens with military honors provided by the United States Marine Corps. Born October 15, 1934, the Williamson County native was the son of the late Hillie Arthur Hughes, Sr. and Trula Brown Hughes. He was a 1953 graduate of Columbia Central High School. Mr. Hughes served three years in the U.S. Marine Corp from 1953 until 1956. He was a member of Herbert Griffin American Legion Post 19. Survivors include his wife of fifty-five years, Marcia White Hughes of Columbia; three children, Michael E. (Kristy) Hughes of Mansfield, Texas, Paula R. Smithson of Rockvale, James B. (Tracy) Hughes, Jr. of Spring Hill; sister, Nellie London of Hohenwald; and five grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Hillie Hughes, Jr.
