Wright, Edwinter Lann
Edwinter Lann Wright was born on June 1, 1953, to Carrie (Oscar) Underwood. She was raised by Pearlie and Willie Wright.
A native of Hickman County, Edwinter received all of her early education in Centerville, Tennessee. She was one of the first African American to integrate into the Hickman County School System. Edwinter graduated from Hickman County Schools in 1971 and continued her education at TSU where she earned her Bachelor’s in Elementary Education. She would go on to earn a Master’s in Education from George Peabody College (Vanderbilt).
Edwinter professed a hope in Christ at an early age. She was known as a songbird and piano player in the Church of God organization, and while she was serving the church, she met and married her husband Elder Joseph Myles in 1979. Their union quickly made her a mother to Felicia Mastin, Benita Jo Thompson, Marchelle Myles, and Willie Mai Myles. She later gave birth to Ryan and Aaliyah Myles.
Edwinter was busy going and doing whatever the Lord called her to do. She served on several auxiliaries as a First Lady while fulfilling her passion as an educator. Edwinter served the Hickman County Schools System for over 37 years before retiring in 2018. During her tenure, she received Teacher of Year distinction five times.
Edwinter’s love for God and God’s people was present in all she did. She had a simple smile, a quick hug, a prayer when needed, an encouraging word, a voice of reason, and a loving rebuke. She was a blessing to all she encountered.
Edwinter left this life on January 26, 2023. She was preceded in death by parents Pearlie and Brown Wright; Carrie (Oscar) Underwood; husband Elder Joseph Myles, and daughter Marchelle Myles.
She leaves to cherish her memory, children Ryan (Amanda) Myles, Aaliyah Myles, Felicia (Ernie) Mastin, Benita Jo Thompson, and Willie Mai Myles; sister Veronica Wilson; brothers Barry (Benita) Walker, Garland (Cheryl) Walker, and Oscar Underwood Jr.; 8 grandchildren and several great grandchildren; her church, special friends (Earnestine, Marsha, Debbie, and Trinace); family, students, and community.
