William H. Jackson
The death of W. H. Jackson, which occurred at his home near Ripley early yesterday morning, removes a valued citizen and an old landmark of Lauderdale County. He came to this county in 1865.He served several years as clerk of the county court and for a long time was a prominent merchant here. He served with honor and distinction as a Confederate soldier and died as brave as he fought. The funeral services will take place today at 10 o'clock at the Methodist Church, burial in Maplewood

Robin D. JENKINS, 63, for many years one of Ripley's leading druggists, died at his home Thursday at about 9 0'clock after a lingering illness of several months duration. Funeral Services were conducted Friday afternoon at the family residence. Interment took place in Maplewood Cemetery. He was a lifelong Member of the Methodist Church. The deceased is survived by his wife; three children; Misses Frances JENKINS and Mary Brandon JENKINS and James C. JENKINS, all of Ripley; one brother, Rev. J. Mack JENKINS and one sister, Mrs. HAMILTON, of Ark.

The death of Mrs. R. C. Klutts, which occurred in Jackson at 5:30 o'clock Wednesday afternoon, following an operation in Crook's Sanatorium, was indeed a shock to the people of Ripley, among whom she had lived for 60 years, and who esteemed her as one of our city's most loveable, consecrated Christian women. Mrs. Klutts had been on a visit to her daughters, Mrs. Harris Brown and Mrs. B. M. Elam, in Jackson for the past month. She became suddenly ill early Wednesday morning and steadily grew worse, when she was taken to the sanatorium in a final effort to save her life. Deceased was a prominent member of the Ripley Baptist Church and was
the widow of the late R. C. Klutts, who up to the time of his death about two years ago, was for many years a leading citizen, merchant and banker in Ripley. Besides her two daughters, Mrs. Klutts is survived by five sons; Will A. Klutts of Miami, Fla., Henry Klutts of Iowa, Alonza, Robert and Broadus Klutts, all of Ripley. Mrs. Klutts was born near Selmer in McNairy County and was 64 years of age at the time of her death. Her maiden name was Sophronia Maness, moving to Lauderdale County with her parents when a mere child. Only one brother of her immediate family survives, Mr. Mack Maness, of Ripley. As we go to press Thursday afternoon, the remains were scheduled to arrive in Ripley on the evening train. Final arrangements for the funeral have not been made awaiting the arrival of the children. Interment will be in Maplewood Cemetery.

The hearts of the people of Ripley were saddened last Monday when a message came from Battle Creek, Mich. that Mrs. W.C. Lackey had passed away at 3 o’clock that morning. Accompanied by her son, Dr. Joe B. Lackey, she had gone to the noted Mayo Bros. for treatment and operation for goiter and had been under their observation about two weeks. This, however, was her second visit there, as on the first occasion several months ago it was found she was not physically able to stand the operation. Returning home her condition gradually grew worse, and her loved ones realized that it was only a question of her life being prolonged a few months or a successful operation. On last Friday she chose the latter alternative in the hope that she might be restored to health and strength, and was recovering nicely from the operation when her heart, weakened by long illness, failed to do its part and the end came quickly. Deceased was the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. J.N. Wardlaw, who were among the first settlers in Ripley, and her grandfather, Hon. Joseph Wardlaw, gave the ground upon which the first Methodist church-- a log structure--was erected in our town. She was born Dec. 12, 1862 and spent her entire life here among our people whose love for her knew no bounds. As Miss Eddie Lane Wardlaw, she was married to Dr. W.K. Lackey on Dec. 8, 1881, and this happy union continued until March 1922 when the dear husband was called to his reward. Of the four children born to this union, one daughter was taken at the age of 12 years, and two sons and one daughter are left to mourn their loss; Dr. Joe B. Lackey and Mr. W.K. Lackey Jr. of Ripley, and Mrs. L.M. Kirkpatrick of Memphis; also one brother and two sisters, Mr. Joe Bass Wardlaw and Mrs. Thomas Steele Sr. of Ripley, and Mrs. M.d. Holloway of Colorado Springs, Cob. The funeral service was conducted at the home Wednesday morning at 10:30 by her pastor, Dr. F.H. Peeples. The remains were laid to rest in Maplewood cemetery. Those from Memphis attending the last sad rites were Mr. Sid Wardlaw and niece Miss Laura Wardlaw, Miss Charlie Henning and Mrs. Burns.

RIPLEY PHYSICIAN DIES. Dr. Joe B. LACKEY died of a heart attack early Monday at Baptist Hospital, Memphis, where he became a patient June 23rd. He was 62. A son of the late Dr. William K. and Eddie L. WARDLAW LACKEY, he was born in Ripley and spent his entire life here. He attended Medical School at Vanderbilt, spent two years as an intern in Bellevue Hospital, New York City. Returning to Ripley, he began the practice of medicine with his father. After the death of his father in 1922, he opened his own office. He leaves a brother, William K. LACKEY, a money order clerk at the Ripley Post Office; a sister, Mrs. Lucillus KIRKPATRICK. Services in the First Methodist Church,burial in Maplewood cemetery.

She leaves her son, Charles of Clarksville, two grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Eli Zebulon Martin was born in 1851 to Lucinda Shoemake and Zebulon Martin. He was raised by step-father W. A. Mahan after the death of his father, and mother Lucinda's remarriage, across the river from Lauderdale County, in Mississippi County, Arkansas before returning to Tennessee as a young man to work and soon marry Ellen Louise Willliams of Ripley. Schooled in business, he was a haberdasher and dry goods merchant and traveling salesman throughout western Tennessee. He raised plantation ponies part time on his Henning farm. He was father to four daughters, Beulah, Lillias, Albertha and Juanita and one son, Eli Van Louis Martin. Another son died in infancy. He died at Baptist Hospital in Memphis in 1919, and is buried at Maplewood Cemetery in Ripley, Tennessee.

Ellen Louise Williams Martin at home in Ripley, Tennessee. Ellen was one of the nine David and Elvyann Williams children, and was born in 1855. She married Eli Martin in a May Day celebration in 1878. Eventual mother to five children who survived into adulthood, she spent her time between her home in Ripley and her husband's farm in Henning. An avid gardener, she is often photographed among her gardens. Known universally as Mama and Papa Martin, they were very active in community, church and social affairs in Lauderdale County. Her brother Robert A. Williams was three times elected Mayor of Ripley. She died suddenly of a stroke in 1915, and is buried in Maplewood Cemetery in Ripley.

The remains of Miss Jennie Mays, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. N. W. Mays, arrived home Tuesday night from Dallas, Texas, accompanied by her mother, two brothers, Brooks and Fulbright, and sister, Bessie, who had been attending her bedside.
The funeral was conducted by Rev. B.F. Blackmon and Rev. George Johnston at the home Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock, and the remains were laid to rest in Maplewood Cemetery. Bro. Johnston, who had known the deceased since infancy, paid a beautiful tribute to her pure Christian life and character. Miss Jennie had been a sufferer for many years. In company with her mother, she first visited the sanitarium at Boulder, Colo., remaining some time before she went to Dallas, where she had been several months prior to her death.

The many friends of Mrs. Fannie Anderson MILLER, wife of Hon. W. B. MILLER, prominent Ripley banker, were grieved to learn of her sudden death at the Methodist Hospital, Memphis Wednesday night, after suffering a stroke. Mrs. MILLER was born at Franklin, Tenn., December 29, 1846. She was a member of the Church of Christ and lived a loyal devouted life to her Master. On june 6, 1888, she was married to Mr. MILLER and had resided here since that time. She is survived by her husband, W. R. MILLER; and two children, Dr. W. R. MILLER, Jr., of Brownsville, and Mrs. R. M. PRICHARD, of Ripley. The funeral was held at the Church of Christ Thursday afternoon, conducted by Elder H. I. COPELAND, assisted by Rev. GREEN & Rev. TAYLOR. Interment in Maplewood Cemetery. Myrtle Sutton Miller
A beautiful life came to a close on Sunday evening, April 17, when the spirit of Myrtle Mai, beloved wife of William Daniel MILLER was called away to be present with the Lord. At the age of 16 years, she accepted the Lord as her Saviour and was a member of the Church of Christ. It was in her pleasant home in Tipton County that she breathed her last; less than a year after leaving her home in Lauderdale County. The funeral service was held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock. She was laid to rest in Maplewood Cemetery. She was the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Julian SUTTON, born November 4, 1899. She was married May 3, 1931. The following sisters and brothers survive: Mrs. Wm.
