Mr. L. B. Archer died at his home in Ripley, Sunday morning about 9 o'clock after an illness which had confined him to his home nearly four years. A partial stroke of paralysis thirteen years ago was the beginning of his illness. His second stroke came in 1921.Mr.Archer was born at Garland in Tipton County and was in his 66th year. When a young man, he moved to Halls, where he held the posion of depot agent for 12 years. He moved to Ripley in 1903. In 1890, he was married to Miss Mamie Young, the daughter of Esq. J. F. Young of Halls. To this union three children were born, Charles Archer of Pine Bluff, AR., D. B. Archer of this city and Mrs. Clarence Thurmond of Dyersburg; Three brothers also survive; W. T. Archer of Memphis, W. A. Archer of Helena , AR., and I. S. Archer of Greensville, MS.The funeral was held at his home, burial in Maplewood Cemetery.

Charles Reed Barbee, 63, died at his home on South Main Street late Monday afternoon, after an illness of heart trouble which confined him to his home the past four months. He was the son of the late John Y. Barbee, one of the early settlers of Ripley and one of the most prominent laymen of Southern Methodism. Mr. Barbee was born in Ripley and spent his entire life here. For over a quarter of a century he was prominent in business and church activities, a member of the First Methodist Church and was general secretary of the Methodist Sunday school at the time of his death.He was holding the position of book keeper for Julian Belton & Co., when forced to retire because of ill health. He is survived by his wife, who before her marriage was Miss Georgia Murrey, prominent socially in Nashville; two children, Murrey Barbee, of Birmingham, Ala, and Mrs. Thompson Kirkpatrick, of Owensboro, Ky.; three brothers, A. J. Barbee, of Ripley, Dr. Taylor Barbee, of Los Angeles, Calif., Isaac Barbee, of Chicago; three sisters, Mrs. V. P. Moriarty, Mrs. E. M. Rice and Mrs. W. Dan Majors, all of Ripley. The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon at 4 o'clock at the Barbee home, conducted by Rev. Howell R. TAYLOR, assisted by Dr. Olin Green, Rev. J. W. Waters and Rev. S. H. Salmon. Interment in Maplewood Cemetery.

The death of Mrs. Priscilla Margaret Read Barbee, which occured suddenly of apoplexy in Ashville, NC, Sunday morning at 12:30 o'clock. Just as the Methodist Sunday class was assembling and the first song was being sung, a messenger came in to bring the sad news that one of its oldest and dearest members had been called to her reward to "a home not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. "Deceased was a member of the Warner Moore Bible Class and was present the previous Sunday. On Tuesday of last week, Mrs. Barbee, in the company of her daughter, Mrs. V. P. Moriarty, Mr. Moriarty and Miss Catherine Moriarty, left for Ashville, NC to spend a few weeks and was visiting in the home of her niece, Mrs. Eugenia Sherrill Smith, at the time of her sudden taking away. a letter to her daughter, Mrs. W. Dan Majors, received a few minutes before the telegram arrived announcing her death, stated she had withstood the trip fine, had driven over the beautiful streets of Ashville and was feeling good. Mrs. Barbee was the widow of John Y. Barbee, who preceded her in death several years, he having died December 1st, 1916. Just after the close of the war, he had moved here from Haywood County and embarked in business. They were married November 1st, 1864, to their union were born: Allen J. Barbee; Mrs. V. P. Moriarty; C. R. Barbee; Mrs. Montell Rice; and Mrs. W. Dan Majors; all of Ripley; Dr. Taylor Barbee, of Knoxville; Isaac Barbee, of Chicago; and Mrs. G. M. Partee, a daughter who died several years ago. The remains arrived in Ripley on Monday night, funeral services were Tuesday morning, burial in Maplewood Cemetery.

In the death of Mrs. Sarah S. Carson, wife of Mr. S. B. Carson, which occurred at her home in Ripley July 20th, 1907, another name has been stricken from the ever-lessening roll of our older settlers, and the aged husband, who had shared her companionship for 40 years and two sons and three daughters are left to attest how sadly they will miss her. Funeral services conducted by Rev. Long, were held at the family residence Sunday afternoon at 4:30, and the remains were laid to rest in Maplewood Cemetery.

HENNING***Mrs. Therza Meazles Carter, wife of Mr. Frank Carter, a merchant of this place, passed away quietly January 31, 1923. She was 59 years of age. Owing to the failing health, Mrs. Carter had been confined to her home for quite awhile, but bore her confinement with the greatest patience and cheerfulness. The community extends deepest sympathy to the bereaved husband, and may he be made to feel by Divine instinct, that his loss, is her eternal gain. Funeral service was held at the Baptist Church in Henning the following day @ 10 a.m. and interment was in Maplewood Cemetery.

First Lt. Wilbur L. Chism, killed in action in France on August 17, 1944, was reburied Thursday morning in Maplewood Cemetery after 11 a.m. services at Garner’s Ripley Funeral Home. The Rev. C. C. Lewis officiated, assisted by the Rev. W. L. Drake. He was a native of the Lightfoot community, but had resided in Memphis from 1937 until his entrance into the Army. He leaves his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Chism, of Hayti, Mo., and a sister, Mrs. Roy Stewart, a resident of Memphis.

Mrs. T. D. Cobb died Tuesday at her home in Ripley. Funeral services were conducted at the Methodist church Wednesday morning and her remains were laid to rest in Maplewood cemetery. She had been a member of the Methodist church for more than 30 years, her father Rev. George Johnston being, perhaps, the oldest, most highly respected and best loved citizens in our town. Born of Christian parents, her life was one of true devotion to God. Her influence for good was not alone limited to the circle of her acquaintances, for others could not but see, admire, and seek to emulate the pure example of her daily walk and life. Prior to her marriage in 1867, she was Miss Elizabeth Adeline Johnston. She was born in NC in 1848, moved to Hardeman county the same year, and
to this county in the fall of 1849, where she had since resided. She was the mother of five children, four of whom survive; Mrs. S. G. Neville, Mrs. R. F. Scott, Charles Cobb, and Birdie COBB.

Capt. Champ C. Conner died at his apartment in the Fortner Hotel in this city at an early hour, following two severe heart attacks, the first of which was on Thursday afternoon. Though he had been in failing health for sometime, he had not been confined to his bed, and his friends and loved ones did not anticipate that the end would come so soon. They realized that owing to his advance age, he could not withstand many more such attacks as those he had been subjected to of late, but they hoped his life might be spared for many years to come. He had lived to a ripe age, lacking only 10 days of being 89 years old, born in Madison County, VA, on April 21, 1841. When a mere youth, he came with his parents to Tennessee. His father, for whom he is named, was one of the first pastors of Ripley Baptist Church. Prior to moving to St. Louis about 15 years ago, Capt. Conner was a bookkeeper for Wm. Tucker Co., Campbell & Keltner and later on a member of Campbell & Conner. He is survived by one daughter, Mrs Kenneth Gardner, of St. Louis; and two sons, Champ C. Conner, of St. Louis and Phil Conner, of Chicago. He was preceded in death by his wife. Interment in Maplewood Cemetery.

DROWNED--The death by drowning of J. T. Coughlan, Jr., 14-year-old son of Sheriff and Mrs. J. T. Coughlan, which occurred in Klutts pond Sunday morning about 10 o'clock, brought sadness to the entire community and hearts went out to the grief-stricken parents. In the company of four other boys, he had gone to the pond to enjoy an outing. It is said he had been in the water quite a while when the tragedy took place. His playmates were unable to save him and he sank in about seven feet of water. After the alarm was given, it was with some difficulty that the body was located by rescurers who hurried to the scene. Two physicians worked faithfully to resuscitate him. The playmates with him were Clyde Chalk, Lynn Crook, Leon Watson and Homer Jamison. Funeral services were held in the Baptist Church Wednesday afternoon at 4:40 o'clock, the remains laid to rest in Maplewood. The pallbearers were his playmates: Jack Hutcheson, Henry Hungate, Homer Jamison, Jack Currie, Clyde Chalk, Lynn Crook, Edward Craig and Ed ROBERSON. Thirty-one years ago last May, two of Ripley's promising youths, John Roberson, son of Mr. & Mrs. W. M. Roberson; and George Palmer, son of Mr. & Mrs. J. E. Palmer; were drowned in this same pond.

John E. Craig passes away--He was the son of Ed & Piercy CRAIG. he served in WWI, spending two years in France. In 1921 he was married to Miss Hilda Majors, and is survived by his widow and two children, John Edward, Jr., and Frances. He is also survived by his mother; sisters, Mrs. H. J. Maness and Mrs. James Klutts; and brothers, Charles R. Craig and James Porter Craig, all from here except the latter, he is living in Mobile, Ala. He was born December 5,1892, he died October 8th, after having been stricken at his place of business. He underwent an operation for constricted gall bladder due to adhesion. He seemed to be recovering but his condition became worse and he past away. Interment in Maplewood Cemetery. Mrs. J. A. Hart and Mrs. Charlie Hart attended the funeral of Mr. John E. CRAIG Friday.

Born in Friendship, Crockett County, September 29, 1869, he graduated from the Academic department of Vanderbilt in 1895 and received his diploma from the Vanderbilt Law School in 1897. He began the practice of law in Alamo in the Fall of 1897, comming to Ripley in 1903, opening his own law office. His services were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the First Methodist Church, with Dr. Loyal O. Hartman, the Rev. W. L. Drake and the Rev. James Irion, of Bells, officiating. The body of Charles Currie, 35,operator of Halls Seed & Fertilizer Co., was recovered Thursday of last week from the South Fork of the Forked Deer River, east of Halls, by John Earhart, who had been searching the river daily for Lauderdale County Sheriff Lewis Gitchell. Services were last Friday in Halls First Baptist Church, burial was in Maplewood Cemetery in Ripley, with Halls Funeral Home in charge. Currie had been missing since December 14th. He leaves his wife, Mrs. Virginia Cherry Currie; a son, Mike Currie; a daughter, Daria Currie, both at home; his parents, Mr. & Mrs. Morris Currie, Halls; a brother, Arthur Currie of Madrid, Spain; and his grandmother, Mrs. Sterling Martin, and his grandfather, Wallace Williams, both of Halls.

She had lived in Lauderdale County 56 years. She was the widow of Osceola Cursey, Ripley produce merchant who died in 1943. She leaves sons, Howard Cursey and Lowell Cursey, both of Ripley, and Bennie Cursey, of Dyersburg; daughter, Mrs. Bernice Roberson, of Ripley and a brother, Walter Pinchley, of Dyersburg.
