Carl Dodson, who lived in Ripley for several years while employed by the Illinois Central Railroad, died Monday in his home in Memphis. He was 80. Burial will follow in Maplewood Cemetery in Ripley, TN. Jere was born to Ella Mae Henderson Escue and Joe Turner Escue on March 5, 1956 in Ripley, TN. He graduated in 1974 from Ripley High School, where he was on the varsity football team for four years. During this time, he attended Philmont Scout Ranch, where he received the "God and County Award", and achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. He also attended the University of Tennessee at Martin, TN and Dyersburg State Community College, later he joined his father in a partnership on the family farm until his death. Jere married Angelia Dianne Ray in 1981. To this union was born Melissa Victoria Escue in 1988. Mr. Escue is survived by his wife, Angelia; a daughter, Melissa Escue; his father, Joe Turner Escue, all of Ripley; a sister, Joan Vaughn, husband, Mike and children, Kirk and Andrea of Franklin, TN; and a brother, Joe T. Escue, wife, Julie, and children, Jessica, Jennifer, Trey, Caroline and Coleman of Anniston, AL; his father-in-law, James Edward Ray and two brothers-in-law, Thomas Ray, wife, Kate, and daughter, Katelyn, Mike Ray, wife, Tammy, and son, Michael, all of Ripley, TN. Ripley mourns the death of Mr. W. H. Flippen, which occurred at his home near town last Sunday morning of dropsy, after an illness of several weeks. He was one of Lauderdale’s best citizens, a most enterprising, industrious farmer and a gentleman whose life measured up to the plane of honor and integrity in its broadest, truest sense. He went by the familiar name of “Penny” and his comrades always found in him the most exacting ties of friendship, a willingness and a readiness to share with them whatever he possessed, and added to the sum of human happiness in every way possible. His remains were laid to rest Monday afternoon in Maplewood Cemetery.

Mrs. J. R. Freeland who was taken ill last week while on a visit to her daughter, Mrs. V. W. YATES, was carried to the Brownsville hospital Friday and passed away Sunday afternoon. The immediate cause of her death was double pneumonia. The remains of Andrew U. Given, who died from a heart attack at his home in Elizabethton at an early hour Monday morning, arrived in Ripley Wednesday morning on the 8:38 train, and after funeral services were laid to rest in Maplewood Cemetery. Mr. GIVEN was in his 57th year, having been born in Ripley on October 19, 1875. For several years he resided in Martin and Covington, and during this perion was engaged in highway construction for the State of Tennessee, building over 100 miles of hard surface roads. Some two years ago, he moved to Elizabethton and organized the East Tennessee Sand & Gravel Co., of which he became general manager at the time and continued in this position until his death. Mr. & Mrs. GIVEN lived in Ripley five years after marriage, and it was here that their three oldest children were born. Mr. GIVEN was a son of Mrs. Kate Hearring GIVEN, who died in 1926, and who was a member of one of the pioneer families of Ripley. He is survived by his widow, who before her marriage was Miss Lena HAMPTON, of St. Louis; one daughter, Mrs. J. A. BOYD, of Memphis; five sons, A. U. GIVEN, Jr., of Atlanta, Ga., William GIVEN, of Memphis, Phillip GIVEN, Robert Alvin GIVEN and Joseph Hampton GIVEN, who reside with their mother in Elizabethton; Phillip being ill with scarlet fever, and the home being in quarantine, preventing Mrs. GIVEN and the three sons living with her from attending the last sad rites. Katherine Hearring Givens
After an illness of only a week, Mrs. Katherine Hearring Givens passed away at the home of her niece, Mrs. J. A. Bandy, in Tunica, Miss. Tuesday afternoon. Funeral services were held at Mrs. Bandy's residence at 8 o'clock Wednesday morning, after which the remains were brought by motor hearse to Ripley, arriving here about noon. They were carried to the home of Mr. Henry L. Johnston, where the many friends of the deceased gathered at 2 o'clock to pay a last tribute to this good woman who resided in our town for over half a century. The services were conducted by Rev. H. R. Taylor of Newbern, assisted by Dr. F. H. Peeples, pastor of the Ripley Methodist Church, of which she was a true and loyal member from an early age up to the time she left Ripley--about 20 years ago--when she went to live with her only son, Mr. Andrew Given, who was making his home in Arlington, Ky. Mrs. Givens was born Sept. 2, 1846 in Ripley, her parents came from Virginia. Had she lived until next September she would have reached the ripe age of 80 years. She was one of eleven children, only two of whom survive; Mrs. Hettie Montague of Ripley; and Mr. Morgan Hearring, of Dallas, Texas. She was married in 1871, and her husband preceded her in death many years ago. To this union only one son was born, Mr. A. U. Given, who now resides in Martin. Six grandchildren survive. The remains were laid to rest in Maplewood Cemetery.

Claude "Leslie" Hamby, 89, widower of Merida Wilson Hamby, of Memphis, formerly of Ripley, died Tuesday in Saint Francis Hospital in Memphis. He was a graduate of Ripley High School where he played football and basketball. He served in the United States Coast Guard for four years during WWII. After the War he returned to Ripley as a partner in the H.M. Wilson and Company, a grocery store on the east side of the Ripley Square. He was employed by the United States Postal Service for twenty-five years. He also served in the Army National Guard for eighteen years. He was a member of Ripley's First United Church where he served on the Administrative Board, was a member of the Men's Comeback Sunday Class and an usher. He also served on the board of Maplewood Cemetery. He is survived by one daughter, Delaine H. Kelly and son in law Jim Kelly, of Germantown, a grandson Gordon Kelly and wife Terry of Germantown and a granddaughter Kimberlee K. Chaney and husband Mark of Charlotte, North Carolina, three great grandsons: Hayden, Harrison and Hudson Kelly of Germantown. He was a devoted husband, a loving father and a wonderful grandfather and great-grandfather. Memorials: Ripley First United Methodist Church or Donor's Choice.

The tragic death of Mr. J. D. HANSON, who was drowned in Chisholm Lake, west of Ripley, Tuesday morning about 9:45 a.m. cast a pall of sadness over our entire community. In company with a party from Ripley, Mr. HANSON had gone to the lake for an outing. Some of the men were up the lake fishing when it was suggested that someone go and notify them to come in with the fish so that lunch might be prepared. HANSON volunteered to go, and within a short distance of the camp his boat was found about 30 minutes after he had left, but no sign of its occupant. The boat had drifted ashore and upon investigation, it was discovered that Mr. HANSON had drowned. A runner was sent to the nearest telephone and friends in Ripley were notified of the deplorable accident. The body was found about 3 p.m. Mr. HANSON was in his 40th year and was a native of Sardis, Miss., where his mother and one sister reside. Another sister, Mrs. J. S. RADFORD lives in Newbern. All three attended the last rites. He was a member of the First Methodist Church in Ripley. He is survived by his widow, who was Miss Carrie LIPSCOMB, of Henning and a little daughter. For 12 years, "Doss" HANSON had been a prominent figure, being connected with the hardware and furniture firm of Thompson Bros. Co., of which he was secretary-treasurer at the time of his death. RIPLEY - Guy Tucker Henderson, 61, pharmacist and investigator for Tennessee Board of Pharmacy, died Saturday at Baptist Memorial Hospital- Lauderdale in Ripley. Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Ripley First Baptist Church, where he was a member, with burial in Maplewood Cemetery. Garner Funeral Home has charge. He was a member of Scottish Rite and a Mason. Henderson, the husband of Camille Bass Henderson, also leaves a daughter, Mrs. Alice Noel of Cadiz, Ky.; a son, David Guy Henderson o f Ripley; a sister, Mrs. Martha Roper of Memphis, and four grandchildren.

Walker Joseph Herndon, infant grandson of Tim and Kitty Herndon, of 225 Lackey Lane, Ripley, died Monday of Last week in Arlinton, Tex. His parents, Frew and Carolyn Hendon, reside in Mansfield, Tex. Walker, of Ripley, Carl and Maxine Herndon, of Pontotoc, Miss., and Novelle Boylston, of Santa Anna, Tex. Uncles are Tucker and Tyler Hendon, of Ripley. Mr. William Henry died at his residence in Ripley Wednesday night at 10 o'clock, at the ripe age of 85 years. For several months he had been gradually failing in health, but was confined to his bed only a few days, before passing away. During his declining days, he was the object of the tenderest affection from his devoted wife, kindred, and friends. With the exception of a few years spent in Texas, he had been a citizen of Ripley since the Civil War, and he and his devoted companion had been married 53 years last August. He was born in Decatur County, TN., in 1840.He was a Confederate War Vet. The funeral was Thursday at the home, burial in Maplewood Cemetery. (parents William Henry, NC & Annie Latta, SC)

Billy Holman, She leaves two daughters, Linda Thomas and Billie Joe Davis, both of Ripley; a son, Tommy Holman of Ripley; six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
