J. B. (Doc) Lawrence, 80, farmer and former member of the State Legislature from Lauderdale County, was killed when struck by a freight train near the depot in Halls Sunday morning. Witnesses related that Mr. LAWRENCE saw the train, but was evidently pulled against it by suction. The body was carried about 150 feet between the double tracks where he was walking. Mosco Edward McDearman, 58, Halls Auto dealer, died at 5:05 a.m. Sunday in St. Joseph Hospital, Memphis after long illness. Services were Monday in First Baptist Church in Halls, burial in Halls Cemetery. McDEARMAN was descended from Pioneer Halls families, the town having originally nemed Halls Station for his great grandfather, Hansford HALL. He moved with his parents to Dell, Ark., at an early age. He returned to Halls in 1933. Two years later, he went to Osceola, Ark., to become assistant cashier of Mississippi County Bank. He returned to Halls in 1942, joining Ford Dealers in Halls, then he and his son, T. E. McDEARMAN purchased the firm in 1965. He leaves his wife, Rebekah Avery McDEARMAN; and his brother, Hall McDEARMAN, all of Halls.

The people of the town were shocked early last Wednesday morning when the sad news came that Thomas McDEARMON, the 17-year-old son of Mrs. Tom GRIFFIN, had breathed his last. He had been sick for about a week of fever, but was thought better. Sad indeed for the mother to give him up, he being her only child. The remains were carried to Halls Thursday and laid to rest.

The death of Mrs. Cora Moore occurred at her home after three weeks illness, Saturday evening brought great grief to the hearts of many who knew her. She was born in Lauderdale County, Tenn., January 13th, 1867, and from her home in Halls, Tenn., June 1st, 1946, she departed this life for her eternal home in the City of God. Death claimed Mr. W.J. Morton, one of our oldest and much beloved citizens on the evening of February 17, 1926. He would have been 82 years of age on the 24th of May. A retired Illinois Central Railroad employee, he was station agent in Gates and Halls during the 1920’s and 1930’s, going to Covington in 1939, where he was freight agent until his retirement in 1955. John Henry Murchison, 84, former editor and publisher of the Halls Graphic, a weekly newspaper, died Thursday at St. Francis Hospital in Memphis. Murchison, born in Maury City in Crockett County, worked for the Graphic before becoming its editor and publisher for 40 years until he retired in 1972. He was a member of the Halls Rotary Club, a recipient of the Halls Man of the Year award in 1985, and was a Sunday school teacher, a Boy Scouts of America master and a volunteer sports announcer for local events. Lana Moss Cherry Nichols, 63, passed away on August 7, 2004 at 7:25 p.m. after a four-year battle with ovarian and colon cancer. She was born on January 17, 1941 to John Moss Cherry and Evelyn Brown Cherry of Friendship. Lana graduated from Friendship High School in 1959 and received her teaching degree and Masters from Memphis State. Lana is survived by her husband of 41 years, William (Bill) Edwin Nichols III of Cairo, and one son, William Edwin Nichols IV (wife Christie); a grandson William (Will) Edwin Nichols V, and granddaughter Elizabeth (Libby) Claire Nichols, all of Friendship. Lana is also survived by her mother, Evelyn Brown Cherry; a sister, Diane Cherry Jordan and an uncle, Parker Cherry all of Friendship. Lana, a retired school teacher, taught at Central Elementary in Ripley, Friendship High School, Crockett High School in Maury City, and Crockett County High School in Alamo. The years following retirement, Lana spent her time helping her son William in his farming operation, Nichols Farms. In her last few months of life, Lana thoroughly enjoyed visits from family, friends, former classmates, and former students. Many hours were spent reminiscing the old days and sharing stories. Some told of the positive impact she had on their lives having her as a teacher. Visitation will be at Ronk Funeral Home in Alamo from 4:30-9:00 p.m. on Monday, August 9. The funeral will be at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 10 at Cairo Baptist Church in Crockett Mills, where she was a member. Bro. Bill Robbins will officiate. Music will be shared by the Cairo Choir, Ann Robbins, David Green and Eddie Martin. Burial will follow at Halls Cemetery. Robert J. Nunn, Halls ginner and planter, died suddenly at 5 a.m. last Friday in Parkview Hospital in Dyersburg, which he had entered a few minutes earlier. He was 62. Ivory Lee Osborne, operator of a local taxie firm and service station, was shot and killed on the east end of Main Street Monday night. Sheriff Oscar GRIGGS and Police Chief W. T. SMITH said the shooting was done by J. C. BRASFIELD, 28, local painter, and father of four small children. The Sheriff was holding BRASFIELD at Ripley for questioning Monday night along with Wilburn NICHOLS, 28, of Friendship, and Marshall SCARBROUGH, 24, of Maury City. He said no charges had been filed and the investigation was not complete. BRASFIELD, NICHOLS, and SCARBROUGH were passengers in one of OSBORNE's taxis which broke down at Chestnut Bluff about four miles out of Halls. The driver, Joe SHERIDAN, telephoned for help, and OSBORNE and another driver drove a second cab to Chestnut Bluff to push the first one to town. Chief SMITH said when the cabs reached town and let one of the passengers out, the second cab rammed into the back of the first, an argument followed he said, in which BRASFIELD shot OSBORNE once with a 25 caliber automatic. Mr. OSBORNE, taken to Baird-Brewer Hospital, Dyersburg, died at 9:15. Mr. OSBORNE, 42, was the brother of the late Ernie B. OSBORNE of Halls, who also was shot and killed on a Halls street about 8 years ago. Mr. OSBORNE leaves his wife, Mrs. Mellie OSBORNE; three children, Pvt. LaVon OSBORNE of the U. S. Army at Ft. W. H. Parks, 66, resident of dyersburg, passed away at the home of his son, Richard H. PARKS in Dyersburg Tuesday morning following a stroke. He was born in Dyersburg and moved to Halls where he lived for awhile. Upon his return to Dyersburg he became a well-known well-driller until he was unable to work.
