He received his MD degree in 1951 from the University of Arkansas School of Medicine and interned one year at St. Joseph Hospital in Memphis before moving to Halls, where he practiced medicine for 17 years. Dr. Elmore attended Little Rock Junior College. He was a member of the American Medical Association and the West Tennessee Medical Association. He leaves his wife, Mrs. Mary Junkersfeld Elmore; two sons, Thomas Dees Elmore of the University of Tennessee at Martin and John Fount Elmore of Halls, and two daughters, Mrs. Mary Constance Williams and Miss Jacquelyn Elmore, both of Halls.

Mary J. Elmore, 82, of Memphis, formerly of Halls, TN, died Friday, November 11, 2005 in Chihuahua, Mexico, while vacationing with family and friends. She was an active member of St. Louis Catholic Church, Altar Guild and Fleur-de-lis, the Memphis Ladies of Charity, the Salvation Army Women's Auxiliary, the Amro Players Club, the Holy Spirit Fun Group and various bridge clubs. Mrs. Elmore was predeceased by her husband, Jack Thomas Elmore, MD; a daughter, Jaquelyn Lanier, and a grandson, Zackary Elmore. She is survived by a daughter, Connie Williams and husband, Frank of Arlington, TN; two sons, John F. Elmore and wife, Mary Frances of Memphis, and Thomas "Dee" Elmore, MD and wife, G.G. of Cordova; two sisters, Bernice Theiliemier of Cordova and Bernette Lloyd of Memphis, 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held on Thursday, April 6, 1944 at the Halls Baptist Church for Winford Leotis Erwin who passed away at his home in Crockett County on Wednesday, April 5, 1944, after an illness of several months. He was 18 years of age.

Walter M. Fowler, Jr., retired Dyersburg business man and a highly esteemed citizen, 182 Sam Houston Drive, died unexpectedly last night of a heart attack. He was stricken at his home and moved to Parkview Hospital where he expired. Born and reared in Dyersburg, Fowler was a shoe merchant in Dyersburg for several years, operating the store on the west side of the square which was established by him and his father. He later sold the store to the Burnette chain. After his retirement he and his wife, Mrs. Katie Pate Fowler, lived in Florida for a while but returned to Dyersburg. Fowler, who was seventy-one, was a veteran of the First World War. He was a member of the Reynolds avenue Church of Christ, and his pastor, Mitchell Palmer, with Albert Lemons, will say the rites for him in the chapel of the Curry Funeral Home at eleven o'clock tomorrow morning. Deputy Sheriff Charlie Gains, was shot in the abdomen with a shotgun load when he sought to make an arrest. He died at 12:10 o’clock Saturday morning. Hubert Ritter Haaga, a family man who maintained ties with his friends through the decades, died Thursday of heart failure at Allen Morgan Health Center. He was 84. Mr. Haaga, of Memphis, formerly of Louisville, Miss., was a retired purchasing agent for Georgia Pacific Corp., a former salesman for Orgill Brothers in Mississippi and later owned Graham Hardware in Louisville, Miss. Although he lived in Mississippi for 50 years, he kept up with his Memphis roots. He frequently held reunions with his boyhood friends from the defunct Boy Scout Troop 4 at Madison Heights Methodist Church in Memphis, which later burned. "We met from time to time and traveled to Louisville, Baton Rouge and other places," said Ed O'Donnell, a friend since the early 1930s. "We'd take trips two or three times. I met him a few times and went to football games." Mr. Haaga grew up in Memphis and graduated from Central High School in 1933 and attended Memphis State College and the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. He served in the Navy in World War II and was a lifelong Catholic. He also was a member of the Rotary Club, American Legion and the Chamber of Commerce in Louisville, Miss. He also was a former chairman of the American Red Cross chapter in Halls and a member of the Lions Club. Jerre T. Jordan
The town of Halls and the surrounding area lost a friend and civic supporter when Jerre Trabune Jordan, Sr., died in his home on Sunday, April 15. Mr. Jordan, 73, was a past mayor of Halls. He served six two-year terms between 1955 and 1967. Jerre was a Merchant Marine for three years during World War II in the pacific. He was superintendent of schools in Lauderdale County in the mid-50’s, a lay leader at Halls First United Methodist Church and Sunday School superintendent there. Jerre leaves his wife, Naulene Wilkes Jordan; two sons, Jerre Jordan, Jr., and Steve Jordan, and families. Steve and his wife, Lisa, reside in Ithaca, N.Y. Jerre and his wife, Martha, along with their two children, Jeff and Blair, live in Baton Rouge, La. Mr. Jordan is survived by a brother, Bruce Jordan of Collierville, Tenn.; three sisters, Edna Budde of Shreveport, La., and Mrs. Dorothy Moore and Carol Crumpler, both of Dyersburg, and three great-grandchildren, Jordan and Alex DeFrank, and Josh Jordan.
