E. L. Edens, 88, Halls farmer, died at 3 a.m. Saturday in a Lockwood, Mo hospital, which he had entered seven weeks earlier. Services were Monday in Ripley Funeral Home, burial in Halls Cemetery. He spent most of his life in Halls before he moved to Missouri two years ago. He leaves three sons, Kenneth EDENS, of Ash Grove, Mo., Lloyd EDENS, of Rockford, Ill., and Glenn EDENS, of Walton, Ky.; a daughter, Mrs. Grace SUMMERLIN, of Memphis; and a brother, Dennis EDENS, of Ann Arbor, Mich.

HALLS - Kenneth Traver Edens, 96, of Rison, Ark., formerly of Halls, retired farmer and businessman, died of heart failure Wednesday at Jefferson Regional Medical Center in Pine Bluff, Ark. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Halls Cemetery. Buie Funeral Home of Rison has charge. Halls Funeral Home has local charge. He was a retired Marine, 50-year Master Mason, member of the Richmond Lodge 94 in Cotton Plant, Ark., and a member of the American Legion Post 0307 in Ash Grave, Mo. Halls, Tenn., Nov. 17, 1969. Mass for Dr. Jack Thomas Elmore Jr., a Halls physician, will be said at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at Holy Angels Catholic Church in Dyersburg. Burial will be in Halls Cemetery with Halls Funeral Home in charge. Dr. Elmore died Monday morning at Memphis Veterans Hospital after a heart attack. He was 48. He received his MD degree in 1951 from the University of Arkansas School of Medicine and interned one year at St. Joseph Hospital in Memphis before moving to Halls, where he practiced medicine for 17 years. Dr. Elmore attended Little Rock Junior College. He was a member of the American Medical Association and the West Tennessee Medical Association. He leaves his wife, Mrs. Mary Junkersfeld Elmore; two sons, Thomas Dees Elmore of the University of Tennessee at Martin and John Fount Elmore of Halls, and two daughters, Mrs. Mary Constance Williams and Miss Jacquelyn Elmore, both of Halls.

Mary J. Elmore, 82, of Memphis, formerly of Halls, TN, died Friday, November 11, 2005 in Chihuahua, Mexico, while vacationing with family and friends. She was an active member of St. Louis Catholic Church, Altar Guild and Fleur-de-lis, the Memphis Ladies of Charity, the Salvation Army Women's Auxiliary, the Amro Players Club, the Holy Spirit Fun Group and various bridge clubs. Mrs. Elmore was predeceased by her husband, Jack Thomas Elmore, MD; a daughter, Jaquelyn Lanier, and a grandson, Zackary Elmore. She is survived by a daughter, Connie Williams and husband, Frank of Arlington, TN; two sons, John F. Elmore and wife, Mary Frances of Memphis, and Thomas "Dee" Elmore, MD and wife, G.G. of Cordova; two sisters, Bernice Theiliemier of Cordova and Bernette Lloyd of Memphis, 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. A Rosary will be said at 5 p.m. with visitation following until 7 p.m. Monday, November 14 at Halls Funeral Home. Funeral mass will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Holy Angels Catholic Church in Dyersburg, TN, with burial in Halls Cemetery.

Winford Leotis Erwin buried Thursday
Funeral services were held on Thursday, April 6, 1944 at the Halls Baptist Church for Winford Leotis Erwin who passed away at his home in Crockett County on Wednesday, April 5, 1944, after an illness of several months. He was 18 years of age.
The Reverend B. R. Winchester conducted the services which were held at 3 o’clock. Burial was in the City Cemetery with Sudbury Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. He leaves his parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. B. Erwin, of Halls, Route 4, and four sisters, Frances, Carlene, Juanita and Faye. Prior to his illness he had been employed in Detroit, Michigan.

Dora Elizabeth Kirby Escue, 94, dry goods clerk and homemaker, died August 25 at Dyersburg Manor Nursing Home. Visitation will be from 10 am. until service time at 2 p.m. Monday, August 28 at Chapel of Halls Funeral Home. Burial in Halls Cemetery. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe C. Escue; she is survived by two sisters, Hazel Pierce and Mildred Vien both of Sherwood, AR; two brothers, R.H. Kirby of Halls, TN and Finis Kirby of Little Rock, AR.

Mr. Espey was born in Crockett County and lived there 48 years before moving to Halls, Tenn. He was a well known resident and contractor of Halls. He was 66 and a member of the Methodist Church. Walter M. Fowler, Jr., retired Dyersburg business man and a highly esteemed citizen, 182 Sam Houston Drive, died unexpectedly last night of a heart attack. He was stricken at his home and moved to Parkview Hospital where he expired. Born and reared in Dyersburg, Fowler was a shoe merchant in Dyersburg for several years, operating the store on the west side of the square which was established by him and his father. He later sold the store to the Burnette chain. After his retirement he and his wife, Mrs. Katie Pate Fowler, lived in Florida for a while but returned to Dyersburg. Fowler, who was seventy-one, was a veteran of the First World War. He was a member of the Reynolds avenue Church of Christ, and his pastor, Mitchell Palmer, with Albert Lemons, will say the rites for him in the chapel of the Curry Funeral Home at eleven o'clock tomorrow morning. Murray Hamilton, Ward Browning, Edie Owen, Bob Miller, Owen Taylor, W. T. Burnette, Sr., and Auburn Stephenson will serve as Pallbearers. Interment will be in the Halls City Cemetery with Curry in charge. William Tell Freano, of Thayer, Mo., formerly of Halls, died at 2:30 p.m. Monday in Mount Vernon, Mo., State Tuberculosis Hospital, which he had entered about a year earlier. He was 79. Services were at 3 p.m. Wednesday in Halls Funeral Home. The Rev. L. A. Criswell officiated. Burial was in Halls Cemetery. He had been ill two years. Born in Crockett County, he lived in Halls a number of years while operating a farm at Bruceville. He moved to Missouri about ten years ago. He was a member of Beech Grove Baptist Church at Bruceville. He leaves his wife, Mrs. May Warren Freano; three step-daughters, Mrs. Jettie Garrison, of Thayer, Mrs. Jewell Childress, of Los Angeles, Calif., and Mrs. Mabel Pulley, of Kansas City, Mo.; and two sisters, Mrs. Addie Davidson and Mrs. Tinnie Buford, both of Halls.

Deputy Sheriff Charlie Gains, was shot in the abdomen with a shotgun load when he sought to make an arrest. He died at 12:10 o’clock Saturday morning. Funeral services for Mr. Gains will be held at the Ripley Funeral Home Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock by the Rev. E. C. Cutlipp. Burial will be in Halls Cemetery, with military honors. Mr. Gains was born in Lauderdale County and spent his entire life here. He was a member of the Lauderdale County Post 86, American Legion and former commander of the local post and a member of the Baptist Church. He was a World War veteran and saw service overseas. He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Josie Waits Gains; his wife, Mrs. Beatrice Steelman Gains; three sons, William Gains, Charles Ray Gains, and Edward Maurice Gains; and a daughter, Ella Josephine Gains, all of Henning.

Hubert Ritter Haaga, a family man who maintained ties with his friends through the decades, died Thursday of heart failure at Allen Morgan Health Center. He was 84. Mr. Haaga, of Memphis, formerly of Louisville, Miss., was a retired purchasing agent for Georgia Pacific Corp., a former salesman for Orgill Brothers in Mississippi and later owned Graham Hardware in Louisville, Miss. Although he lived in Mississippi for 50 years, he kept up with his Memphis roots. He frequently held reunions with his boyhood friends from the defunct Boy Scout Troop 4 at Madison Heights Methodist Church in Memphis, which later burned. "We met from time to time and traveled to Louisville, Baton Rouge and other places," said Ed O'Donnell, a friend since the early 1930s. "We'd take trips two or three times. I met him a few times and went to football games." Mr. Haaga grew up in Memphis and graduated from Central High School in 1933 and attended Memphis State College and the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. He served in the Navy in World War II and was a lifelong Catholic. He also was a member of the Rotary Club, American Legion and the Chamber of Commerce in Louisville, Miss. Jerre T. Jordan
The town of Halls and the surrounding area lost a friend and civic supporter when Jerre Trabune Jordan, Sr., died in his home on Sunday, April 15. Mr. Jordan, 73, was a past mayor of Halls. He served six two-year terms between 1955 and 1967. Jerre was a Merchant Marine for three years during World War II in the pacific. He was superintendent of schools in Lauderdale County in the mid-50’s, a lay leader at Halls First United Methodist Church and Sunday School superintendent there. Jerre leaves his wife, Naulene Wilkes Jordan; two sons, Jerre Jordan, Jr., and Steve Jordan, and families. Steve and his wife, Lisa, reside in Ithaca, N.Y. Jerre and his wife, Martha, along with their two children, Jeff and Blair, live in Baton Rouge, La. Mr. Jordan is survived by a brother, Bruce Jordan of Collierville, Tenn.; three sisters, Edna Budde of Shreveport, La., and Mrs. Dorothy Moore and Carol Crumpler, both of Dyersburg, and three great-grandchildren, Jordan and Alex DeFrank, and Josh Jordan.
