Mrs. Bettie Ball, wife of the late William Ball passed
away at the home of her daughter and son-in-law George T. and Claudia Miller, Monday night at
nine o’clock after an illness of several weeks. Mrs. Ball had been in failing health for
some time. She was born August 9, 1855, in Haywood County, and died age seventy-seven years.
Mrs. Ball was first married to Ben P. Humphreys, who also preceded her in death. To this union
were born two daughters, Mrs. Miller and Mrs. Mary Ferguson, of this place. To the latter union
was born one son, Ulus Ball, with whom she resides in Memphis until he moved to California,
and she moved back to Lauderdale County. She is also survived by four brothers, Lee Jones of
this place and three other brothers, twelve great-grandchildren, Mrs. Ball, many years ago resided
in Haywood County, but for years made her home here.

Mrs. Briggs lived at Halls most of her life. She was the widow of J. W. Briggs, Halls farmer.
She was 77 and had been ill for more than a year. She was an active member of the Methodist
Church. She leaves two daughters, Mrs. Bedwell and Mrs. Charles H. Hilliard of Ripley; a sister,

He served two years in the Air Force during World War II. He was associated with his father,
the late R. E. Craddock, in a cannery business in Halls. He was a director of Bank of Halls
and served three terms as Halls alderman, 1971-76. He leaves his wife Dot Stanley Craddock;
and a son, R. E. Jr., and daughter, Miss Janiece Craddock, both of Memphis.

Frances Nunn Craig was born on August 17, 1920
in Halls, TN daughter of the late Dr. Marvin and Susan Fletcher Nunn and died after a long and
caring life at age 85. She lived most of her life in Halls and maintained an abiding love for
the city of Halls and Halls First United Methodist Church and its choir. She was preceded in
death by her husband Frederick Gilbert Craig; a sister Virginia Sugg; two brothers Marvin Nunn
and William Sugg. Mourned by her loving family she leaves a daughter, Susan (George) Craig Hiscox;
two beloved grandsons, Elliot Craig Hiscox and Stephen Nunn Hiscox and many friends. She also
leaves a special caretaker, Hattie Schaffer who contributed greatly to her comfort and quality
of life during the last few years. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, June
29, 2006 at Halls Cemetery in Halls, TN with Rev. Randy Jetton officiating. Burial will follow
with Lawrence-Sorensen Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. The family requests that any

DIED AT EXCELSIOR SPRINGS..Glynn A. DUNCAN died at the Veterans Hospital, Excelsior Springs,

months combat duty in Germany. He returned from Overseas duty July 12, 1945. After a 30 day

of Halls and Christy Hopper of Lebanon; a brother, Neil Dyer of Halls, four grandchildren and
seven great-grandchildren.

Ross W. Dyer, lawyer, former Tennessee Supreme Court
chief justice and former state senator, died Sunday at his Lauderdale County home after a long
illness. He was 81. Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. today at Halls First United Methodist
Church, where he was a member. Burial is in Halls Cemetery. Halls Funeral Home has charge of
arrangements. Judge Dyer served on the state Supreme Court from 1961 to 1974, when the Tennessee
Democratic Party failed to renominate him for a third term. He became the court's chief justice
in 1969. After his tenure on the high court, he returned to Halls to practice law. He was born
in Lauderdale County in 1911, attended the University of Tennessee and Cumberland University,
and received his law degree from the old YMCA Law School (now named the Nashville School of
Law) in 1937. He served three years in the Army Medical Corps in Europe during World War II
before returning to practice law in Halls. Judge Dyer was elected a delegate to the Tennessee
Constitutional Convention of 1953 and served as a state senator representing Lauderdale, Crockett
and Dyer counties for one term, 1957-58. He also served as an administrative assistant to the
late governor Buford Ellington, who appointed him to the Supreme Court. He was a Mason and a
charter member of the Halls-Gates Rotary. Judge Dyer leaves his wife, Agnes Moss Dyer; a son,
Tom Dyer, a Memphis attorney; three sisters, Virginia Dyer of Jacksonville, Fla., Margaret Smith
of Albany, Ga., and Clarene Edwards of Memphis, and two grandchildren. In lieu of flowers the
family requests that any memorials be sent to Halls Methodist Church, Halls Cemetery or the
charity of the donor's choice.

Virginia Dyer—Burial Saturday in Halls Cemetery,
with Halls Funeral Home in charge, mourned a former resident, Virginia Stuart Dyer, 91, retired
school teacher in Jacksonville, Fla. She died Thursday of last week in DeSoto Healthcare in
Southhaven, Miss. She was a member of Halls, United Methodist Church
