Houston County is located in Middle Tennessee, one of the state’s three “grand divisions”. It is bordered on the north by Stewart County, on the east by Dickson County, on the south by Humphreys County and on the west by Benton County. Houston County was established January 21, 1871 from lands that had been part of Dickson, Humphreys, and Stewart Counties. Erin is the County Seat. The county was named for Samuel Houston (1793-1863), a Tennessee Congressman and Governor, as well as the first President of the Texas republic.
