The Houston County Archives was established by an act of the Houston County Legislative Body on November 15, 2010. Our mission is to preserve and archive the Houston County Government records and also to collect and preserve local historical and genealogical records.

The Houston County Archives has 150 years of archived records about Houston County and many of the people, businesses, churches and schools that have been here. The Houston County Archives has records from Circuit Court, Chancery Court, County Court, and General Sessions Court.  You can find Tax Records, Marriage Records, Probate Records, Maps, Manuscript Collections, Vertical Files and so much more!

On January 31, 2022, the Houston County Archives received the designation of Houston County Archives & Museum from the Houston County Legislative Body. The Houston County Archives & Museum is a place where researchers can come and research their family history and local history related to the Wells Creek Basin, Lime Kilns, Iron Furnaces and the L&N Railroad.

The Houston County Archives & Museum is asking the public to search their attics, basements and closets for any old records, photographs and artifacts about Houston County and consider donating these records to the Archives. We accept original records and encourage you to send digital copies of what you have. Here is a list of some of the things we are looking for:
