Of the curiosities of Bolivar, and it might be added of the world “Big Hatchie” mentions Gen. R. P. NEELY the only railroad Receiver who made a profit for the state. It only remains to be added that Bolivar alone can boast of such attraction. -Avalanche.

Died at the residence of her son-in-law; Gen. R. P. NEELY, in this place, on the 26th of January 1868, Mrs. Catherine LEA, aged 84 years. Deceased was a native of Delaware, and in company with her husband, John LEA, settled in Bolivar in 1828. Her remains were conveyed to Cincinati, Ohio, for interment, where sleeps the ashes of her husband and many kindred.

The following is a synopsis of business transacted in the County Court of Hardeman at its January term, 1868.
The Chairman presented his annual report, which was read and approved.
An election for Chairman and Quorum Justices for the year 1868 was held, which resulted in the election of J. H. BILLS, Chairman, and A. H. ROSE and J. B. FAWCETT Quorum Justices.
Settlement with County Trustee, 1867, was presented and approved.
Receipts from County Trustee to the Clerk County Court for revenue collected on privileges, for year 1867, were presented, approved and ordered to be recorded.
Ordered that the Chairman receive for his services for the year 1868 the sum of $3.50 per day holding court, and $150 per year as financial agent, and that the Quorum Justices receive $3 per day each holding court.
Order appropriating to sundry persons for accounts against the county, amounting to $455.81.
The Poor House Commissioners reported a contract with Abner LAMBERT for keeping, feeding and clothing paupers sent him during year 1868, for $100 each, which was approved, and ordered that the house of said LAMBERT is hereafter to be held the poor house of the county for such paupers as the commissioners cannot find homes for less.
Ordered that the following taxes be levied on property, polls and privileges for county purposes for year 1868:
On each $100 work of taxable property, 12-1/2 cents.
On each free poll, 50 cents.
On each merchant, druggist, peddler, jeweler, confectioner or tippling house, $25.
On each circus, show or concert, for profit, each day $25.
On each foreign insurance company having an agency in Hardeman county, $25.

Lamentable
Last Thursday morning Mrs. LEA, the aged and respected mother of the wife of Gen. R. P. NEELY, for some time an almost helpless invalid, while attempting to rise from her seat, fell upon the hearth, and was so severely burned about the face and neck that her life is despaired of. The unfortunate lady, owing to the face that she was suffering from paralysis, could not extricate herself from the awful position in which she was place. As soon as possible assistance was rendered, but alas too late to save her from a terrible fate. The sad occurrence has caused the profoundest grief to a large circle of acquaintances and friends, all of whom deeply sympathize with her relatives in this the hour of their affliction. Dr. COLEMAN was called in and is rendering all the assistance that man can perform.

Ere long another and perhaps dismal winter will be upon us. At present nearly every road in the county is in pass-able condition. But how will it be when the wet, cold season sets in? All of our townsfolk remember the terrible condition the roads were in during the greater part of last winter and spring. For weeks at a time the Hatchie bottom was almost if not quite impassable. Especially does this apply to that portion between here and Statler’s Ferry. Owing to the fact that people who live on the east side of the river could not get to Bolivar with their wagons and cotton, a new road was opened through to Middleton, a ferry established on the river a few miles above the old Purdy crossing, and the business of this place was made to suffer in consequence. Would it not be well to look after the condition of the leading roads? Certainly the route that leads from one county side to another should be kept in pass-able condition at all seasons of the year. For the benefit of Bolivar and the accommodation of all let the proper authorities take hold of this matter. And here we would call the attention of the corporate authorities to the wretched condition of the street that runs from the north side of the public square to the top of the hill just west of the brick yard. At present it is impossible to travel that portion of the street below the residence of Gen. R. P. NEELY with a vehicle of any kind. Even the former site of the old street is “growing terribly less,” and if work is not done on it one or two more winters will serve to wash its very foundation away.

It is to be hoped that the above request will be complied with at as early a day as possible. The Monumental Society of Hardeman county, of which Mrs. R. P. NEELY is president, is anxious to perfect the work which has been voluntarily taken in hand. Commissioned, non-commissioned officers and privates who served in the lost cause, and who are acquainted with the named of persons from this county who lost their lives in battle or disease during the war, are urgently requested to forward information to the society at once, as a monument is to be built sacred to the memory of the Confederate dead, on which their names are to be engraved.

The following is a synopsis of business transacted in the County Court at Hardeman county, at its January term, 1867.
An election held for Chairman and Quorum Justices for the year 1867, which resulted in the election of John H. BILLS, Chairman; and A. H. ROSE and J. B. FAWCETT, Quorum Justices.
Order levying the following taxes on property, polls and privileges for 1867, to wit: for county purposes on each $100 worth of taxable property, 12-1/2 cents; taxable free poll, 50 cents; merchants, druggists, peddlers, grocers, jewelers, confectioners or tippling houses, $25; circuses, shows or concerts for profit each day, $25. Foreign insurance companies having an agency in Hardeman count, $12.50.

A statement with J. WATSON, County Trustee, was presented showing amount received by him during the year 1866, of $6,179.81, and amount paid out of $6,576.03, leaving in his favor of $396.22, which settlement was approved and ordered to be recorded.
A settlement of the county revenue collected by the clerk county court on privileges for the year 1866, amounting to $1,900.25 was presented, approved and ordered to be recorded, and the County Trustee’s receipt for the amount, which was also approved.
A statement of the County Revenue collected by the Clerk of the Circuit Court for the year 1866, amounting to $19.50, was presented, approved and ordered to be recorded and the county Trustee’s receipt for the amount, which was also approved.
Ordered that the chairman be allowed $2.50 per day for services as presiding magistrate, and $50 per quarter as financial agent, and the Quorum Justices be allowed $2 per day for services holding court, and that the Justices each be allowed $2 per day for attending and holding the quarterly courts for the year 1867.
Ordered that the review commissioners be allowed $20 each for assessing the taxes in their respective districts for the year 1867.
Order appointing George S. GIBSON, A. COX and Grove ROOK commissioners for the poor for the year 1867.
Appropriations made amounting to $1,062.21.
Order requesting the court house commissioners to prepare a plan and let the building of a new court house, subject to the approval of the court at its April term, and adding John H. BILLS to the list of commissioners.
Order fixing the rates of ferriage the same as 1866, which is as follows, to-wit; for each footman, 5 cents; for each man and horse, 10 cents; for each horse, mule, jack or jannet, 5 cents; for each head of cattle, 5 cents; for each head of sheep, goat or hog, 2-1/2 cents; for each 2 horse wagon, 50 cents; for each 4 horse wagon, 75 cents; for each 6 horse wagon, one dollar, and the same where oxen are used in place of horses; for each carriage, carryall or hack, 75 cents; for each pleasure carriage, 75 cents; for each buggy 50 cents; and that all persons residing in the county of Hardeman be allowed to cross at half price, and that the different ferry keepers be required to keep posted at their ferries the above rates of toll.
The commissioner of registration reported the following number of voters registered to the 1st of January, 1867, to-wit: Class 1, 28; Class 2, 6; Class 3, 59; and Class 4, 228. Total, 321.
Resignation of A. B. CRAIN as constable of district 16 tendered and accepted and an election ordered to fill the vacancy.
Order requiring the sheriff to open and hold elections in districts 1, 11 and 17 to fill the vacancies of constables.
James MURDAUGH, constable elect in district 15, entered into bonds and duly qualified.

A number of citizens of Hardeman met at the residence of Mrs. ROPER, in Bolivar, for the purpose of organizing a “Monumental Society,” the object and aims of which are to devise measures and means for erecting a shaft to the memory of the sons of Hardeman who lost their lives in the late unhappy war. We have been handed the following Preamble, etc., of the organization by A. T. MCNEAL, Esq., with the request to publish the same, which we cheerfully do:
Preamble
Inasmuch as we deem it a sacred duty of the living to pay some respect to the memory of those who fell in the late struggle, giving up their lives in a cause which was ours as well as their own; and as many of the purest and best citizens of our county perished at the post of duty, and now rest in graves unknown and unmarked, we believe it due from us to each and every one of them to hand down to posterity some testimonial of our appreciation of their sacrifice, therefore –
Resolved, That we, the undersigned, agree to form ourselves into an organization for the purpose of bringing this object to the attention of the people of our county, and pledge each other that we will use our best energies to have erected, in Court Square in the town of Bolivar, or some other suitable place, a monument commemorative of the Confederate dead of Hardeman county.
