John Cox Will (1822)
In the name of God, Amen, I John Cox of the County of Carroll and State of Tennessee being weak in body but of perfec mind and memory knowing the uncertainty of this life do make and ordain this my last will and testament, first I recommend my Soule to almighty God who gave it and my body to the grave to be interredin christian like manner as to my worldly estate which it pleased God to bless me with I do will in manner and form as follows: (viz) I will that my beloved wife Purity Cox have all my estate during her natural life I also will that my executors do sell my waggon hindkeer Rifle gun and Ball horse and gray mare and with the proffits arisin from the sale of the above and the money I ahve on hand, I will that they purchase land for the bennefit of my beloved wife Purity Cox during her natural life and at her decease the said land to be purchased to be equally divided between my beloved sons William and James Cox I do also will that my beloved Daughter Sally Cox have one good bed one cow and calf one Side Saddle one flax wheel I also will my beloved Daughter Rhoda Barnhart have Twenty Five Dollars I also will that my Son in Law Peter Culp have one dollar. I also will that at the decease of my beloved wife Purity Cox that my negro girl Nancy and all the ballance of my property not heretofore willed be equally divided between my Daughter Sally Cox and Sally Culp and Nancy Mc Makin my Niece I do hereby make and ordain this my las Will and Testament revoking all others by me made as witness my hand and Seal this forth day of February in the Year of Our Lord one thousand Eight hundred & twenty two.
