FINNEY, Newton Jefferson, educator; born Mt. Juliet, Tenn., Nov. 6, 1846; Scotch-Irish descent; son of William and Eliza Jane (Cloyd) FINNEY; father’s occupation farmer; paternal grandparents William and Margaret (Jefferson) FINNEY; maternal grandparents Newton and Elizabeth (Williamson) CLOYD; educated at Mt. Juliet (Tenn.) High School and Cumberland University; graduated from latter with B.A. degree, 1868; M.A. 1870; in early life worked on farm in summer and attended school in winter; after graduation he began teaching; married Ruth Louisa SMITH, Dec. 19, 1872; member Royal Arch Masons; Democrat; was for several years president of Cumberland Female College, McMinnville, Tenn.; now president of the Bethel College, McKenzie, Tenn., the Theological School of the Cumberland Presbyterian church; member of Cumberland Presbyterian church and ruling elder in same.
