Michael  WILSON  was born 15 Mar, 1819 in TN, and died 01 May, 1887 in Cannon Co., TN.
He married Martha “Mattie” BRYSON 16 Oct, 1838 in Cannon Co., TN, Martha is the daughter     of Joseph BRYSON and Sarah BOGLE. None of us know who Michael Wilson’s parents are. So far, I have found no records linking him to possible parents or even sibblings. Other than the marriage record found in 1838 Cannon County records the earliest record I have found on him begins with the 1840 Cannon Co. Census. This family chronicle covers all information records and documents I have to date on this family. Michael & Martha Wilson are my 4th great grandparents. The 1840 census listed Michael Wilson HH 1m 20-30, 1f 15-20, 1f -5. On May 30 1846 Andrew Bogle deeds Michael Wilson 150 acres beginning in the N. boundary line of Michael Wilson’s tract located in district No.11. The tract passes 2 corners of Robt. Brysons property. The 1850 Cannon Co. Census lists Micall 30  Farmer TN Martha 24 TN, Sarah 10, Elizabeth 8, Louisa 6, Lucinda 4, Martha 2, Melvina 8/12. (they were living next door to Martha’s parents, Joseph & Sarah Bogle Bryson). On Sept 8 1855  Michael Wilson deeds 30 acres to Wm. C. Jones  A tract of land in district No.11, beginning at a hickory on M. Jones corner and on August 17 1857  William Wilson deeds 30 acres to Michael Wilson  A tract of land in district No.11, beginning at a hickory on  M. Jones corner which appears to be the same tract that Michael deeded to Wm. Wilson in 1855. In 1860 the Cannon Co. Census lists Michael 41,Martha 36, Lucinda 16, Martha 13, Nancy 11, Sam’l 9, Joseph 6, Wm. 4, Perlina 1. On Nov 17 1860  Michael Wilson deeds 400 acres to Joseph Bryson  A tract of land in district No.11 beginning at a sugar tree at  Wm. Davenport’s corner. William Davenport is Michael’s brother in law and husband of Polly Bryson Davenport who is sister to Michael’s wife. On Jan 7 1861 Michael Wilson deeds 170 acres to Sam’l B. Bryson  A tract of land in district No.11and Jan 16 1868  Michael & Martha Wilson deeded 40 acres to Mary E. Bogle  A tract of land in district No.11. On 20 Feb 1869  Michael & Martha Wilson deed 90 acres to Wm. H. Fann  A tract of land in district 11 on Sanders Fork bordering S.B. Bryson, J.C. Leech & Robt. Bryson.  Wm. H. Fann is the husband of Michael & Martha’s daughter Martha and 23 Aug 1870 Michael & Martha Wilson deed 130 acres to Sam’l B. Bryson  A tract of land in district No.11.The three land deeds involving Michael & Martha may have been due to her father’s estate settlement. Joseph Bryson died in 1865. His wife, Sarah Bogle Bryson died in 1868. Joseph’s will states that  his land and dwelling was to remain in his wife’s  possession until her death. After her death his son Sam’l B. Bryson would have the tract on  which the dwelling house stands which bordered Wm. C. Leech and Joseph Bryson, Jr. His dau Jane Bryson, wife of Joseph Bryson Jr.  would have all of the land west of James Reed’s line. The balance would go to dau’s Martha Wilson & Polly Davenport to be divided to the best advantage. He noted that he held notes, accounts and credits on Michael Wilson & Wm. Davenport which must be counted as a selloff in the division of property. Cannon County records indicate that in 1868 arbitrators were approved by the courts to settle all matters in dispute on the lands of Joseph Bryson. The land was divided
according to the terms of the will of Joseph Bryson. It was determined that Michael Wilson & William Davenport owed the estate several hundred dollars and  since the estate was indebted several hundred dollars the debts would have to be paid out of the land. The land is described as being situated on the waters of Sanders Fork of Smiths Fork in Civil District No. 11. Sam’l Bogle Bryson, son of Joseph & Sarah left a will probated in Cannon Co. 6 Oct 1879 that describes the Bryson land as being bordered by the following neighbors: Wm. Sauls (west), J.J. Bryson (south), Wm. Davenport (south), J.C. Leech (east), Wm. Blanks (east), Robt. Bryson (north), D.D. Bryson (east), Herriman (south), and R.J. Davenport (west).

In 1870 the Rutherford Co. Census lists Michael 52, Martha 46, Sam’l 18, Joseph 15, Wm. 13, Perlina 11, Rosa 8, Michael 5. Also in the HH: Sarah Beadon 20 NC.  Why Martha & Michael were enumerated in the 21st Civil District, Murfreesboro, Rutherford Co.,TN. is a mystery unless it was because they had to sell their land to pay the estate debt and move. The 1868 arbitration indicates that may be the case.

Michael is listed as a farmer in 1870 and the value of his real estate is $400. By the 1880 census they are back in Cannon Co., but located in district 14. In the 1880 Cannon Co. Census Michael 67,Martha 56, Wm. A. 22, Michael S. 15. Also in HH: Polemay T. 23 Servant, Robt. L. 2. On Feb 12 1881  Michael Wilson & Wife deed 35 1/2 acres to Samuel B. Wilson  A tract located in District No. 14. Sam B. Wilson is their oldest son. On May 20 1888  Martha Wilson deeds 38 acres to William Allen Wilson  A tract located in District No. 14. and also on May 20 1888  Martha Wilson deeds 70 acres to Michael S. Wilson  A tract located in District No.14 on the condition that said Michael keep  her her lifetime and should he outlive her and the contract has been complied with the land is his to keep. But on Nov 27 1896  Martha Wilson rescends the prior deed given to Michael S. Wilson  as he refused  to comply with the conditions of the deed and left the  state of Tennessee. She deeds the land to W.A. Wilson with the condition that he support and maintain her during her lifetime.

Cannon County estate inventory records indicate that Martha died in 1897. A Bond was given by W.A. Wilson and approved by the Cannon Co. court on 1 Mar 1897 as Martha Wilson had died leaving no will. He was approved as admin of her estate. The inventory of her estate was given by her son W.A. Wilson. and recorded by the court  29 May 1897.  Sources

They spent their lives in Cannon Co. and have many proud descendants there today. Joe Don Fann pointed out Martha & Williams gravesites to me. There is no stone. William  & Nancy migrated to Humboldt, TN abt. 1915.  William & Nancy are both buried at White Rose Cem,Humboldt,Gibson Co.,TN

 8.  Samuel B. WILSON (Michael1) was born 1851 in Cannon Co., TN, and died 1887 in Cannon Co., TN.  He married Nancy Elizabeth “Ma” HIGGINS PICTURE 10 Sep, 1874 in Cannon Co., TN   daughter of Elijah HIGGINS and Laura PATRICK.
Feb 12 1881  Michael Wilson & Wife deed 35 1/2 acres to Samuel B. Wilson  A tract located in District No. 14 for $350.
I am told Sam is buried at Duggin cemetery in an unmarked grave. His Death date is an estimation. It is thought that he died from a heart attack after helping fight a fire in Woodbury. Mazle Duggin was told that Sam died while Nancy Wilson was still carrying the youngest child Lovie. Since Lovie was born in 1887 we are using that date until other records can be found. Feb 25 1888 Nancie Wilson for possession deed of land 53 acres 2 rods 28 poles T.W. Davenport & J.D. Alexander chain carriers (The survey on this parcel includes the original 35 acres Sam purchased from his parents in 1881.) I do not have a land deed to account for the remaining acres. Apparently this survey was done as part of Sam’s estate settlement. I am told that, although she had not lived on it in years, Nancy still had possession of this property when she died in 1937. Nancy’s death certificate indicates Cause of death: Myocarditis-Inflammation of the heart muscles. Informant J.W. Wilson, Hanson,KY. Birthplace: Canon Co.,TN Father: Lige Higgins Mothers maiden name: Patrick
Mazle Duggin says that “Ma” Wilson was loved by all of her grand children and they all loved going to visit her. Nancy Higgins Wilson was left a widow was carrying her youngest child Lovie when Sam B. Wilson died. She was very poor and had very strong religious beliefs. She raised her daughter Nolie’s twin girls until they started school. Nolie died when the twins were born. Ma lived with her daughter Mattie in little house on Tommy Alexander’s farm after Mattie’s husband James “Jim” Frances died. They migrated to Slaughters,KY when Mattie’s boys decided to take their uncle Mike’s advise and move there to make a better living. That is where Ma Wilson passed away. Mazle remembers Ma telling the kids about gathering wood one winter after Sam B. died. They put a big log on the fire and a big snake crawled out of it onto the hearth. We bet they all scattered! Ma always wore long dresses and sat in a straight back chair at the kitchen door.

Children of Samuel WILSON and Nancy HIGGINS are:
49 i. Michael  WILSON  born 10 Jul, 1874 in Woodbury, Cannon Co., TN; died 02 Feb, 1968 in Slaughters, KY.  He married Frances Emmaline “Fannie” ALEXANDER 13 Jan, 1895 in Cannon Co., TN77. Mazle Duggin remembers uncle Mike well. She told me that Uncle Mike’s father died when he was 13 years old. There was a large family to care for and Mike worked hard to help his mother do that. He had to became the man of the house. He spent his life helping his mother and  family and they all looked up to him. Mary Wilson Bean remembered that Mike Wilson had a great sense of humor. He enjoyed kidding and telling jokes on people. He was the oldest child of the family but outlived all the others.

50 ii. Lorry Magnolia “Nolie” WILSON born 23 Jan, 1879 in Cannon Co.,TN; died 04 Sep, 1910 in Cannon Co., TN.  She married Thomas Abram ALEXANDER 13 Dec, 1894 in Cannon Co.,TN. Nolie died after giving birth to the twins in 1910. Nola & Maggie were cared for by Nolie’s mother Nancy Higgins Wilson until they were old enough to attend school. “Ma” Higgins lived for many years in a little house on Tommy Alexander’s farm until she migrated to Ky.

51 iii. James Willie “Billy” WILSON  PICTURE born 03 Jun, 1880 in Cannon Co., TN; died 21 Apr, 1938 in Hopkins Co., KY.  He married Mary Ella DAVENPORT PICTURE 27 Feb, 1901 in Cannon Co., TN  the daughter of Mary E. Preston & Joseph B. Davenport.
“Hopkins Farmer Dies of Injuries”, J.W. Wilson, of Hanson Section, Is Victim of Team of Frightened Horses.
Madisonville, Ky.,April 21-J.W. Wilson, 58, a farmer of the Hanson section dies this morning in the hospital from injuries received on April 14. Mr. Wilson was driving his team of horses to Hanson for the purpose of plowing some gardens. He had his dog tied, but the dog got loose and began following him. He stopped the team and got out of the wagon to make the dog go back home. The team became frightened, made a lunge and herked him down. He got up and the team jerked him down again. It jerked him down a third time and threw him onto a wheel of the wagon, causing his spine to be injured and paralized him from the shoulders down. Wilson was born in Tennessee, but lived in the Hanson section 38 years. He was a member of Mt. Gilead General Baptist church. He is survived by his widow, four sons, Sam Wilson, Whit Wilson, Mody Wilson and Homer Wilson, all of Chicago, and four daughters, Mrs. Hallie Nance of Madisonville, Mrs. Pauline Mauer of Chicago, Miss Gertrude Wilson of Hanson, and Miss Mary Wilson of Chicago. He also has one brother Mike Wilson who lives in Nebo.
A certified copy of Federal Census taken 1 June 1900, District 14. lists Mary Ella Davenport in HH of Polly Davenport, relationship granddaughter, age 18, birth Aug 1881 TN. This certificate was provided to Mary Ella Wilson, 6229 Columbia, St.Louis, Mo. as a replacement for a birth certificate which she needed for social security benefits. Mary Ella and James Willie were second cousins. Their grandmothers were sisters Martha & Polly Bryson. Martha was the wife of Michael Wilson and Polly was the wife of William Davenport.

52 iv. Mattie WILSON born 1881 in Cannon Co.,TN; died 1936 in Hopkins Co., KY.  She married James FRANCIS.
Mattie moved to Hopkins Co.,KY with her boys and remained there until she died. Mary Wilson Bean wrote that Mattie was the only one of her father’s sisters that she ever really knew because she lived near them in Ky.  Aunt Mattie was a sweet, kind lady and very religious. She was a wonderful seamstress. If we saw a dress in a catalogue we liked she would sit down and cut out a pattern from newspaper and make the dress. She made my sisters Pauline and Gert a graduation dress that way. When aunt Mattie got sick the doctor told her she had a broken rib and taped up her ribs. Six months later she died from TB.

53 v. Maudie WILSON PICTURE born 12 Sep, 1886 in Cannon Co.,TN; died 28 Aug, 1924 in Cannon Co.,TN.  She married Sam Tom
DAVENPORT. Sam Tom moved his family to Hopkins Co.,Ky after Maudie’s death.

54 vi. Lovie WILSON  born 12 Apr, 1887 in Cannon Co.,TN; died 28 Jul, 1926 in Cannon Co.,TN.  She married Johnnie BARRETT.
        Lovie also died from TB.

 9.  Joseph Jasper WILSON PICTURE (Michael1) was born 18 Aug, 1855 in Cannon Co.,TN, and died 02 Sep, 1932 in Scottsville,Allen Co.,KY.  He  married Mary Angeline HIGGINS 18 Jul, 1874 in Cannon Co., TN, daughter of Elijah HIGGINS and Laura PATRICK.
1880 Cannon Co. Census: Joseph J. 25,Angeline 23, Lorry H. 55, Martha D. 5, Coga H. 3,Thomas A. 1. All born in TN.
FGS information was provided by Roy Wilson, grandson of Joseph Wilson. Since Joseph was not in attendance at his mothers estate sale I am assuming he had already moved to Ky by then. Maybe he went with his little brother Michael S. Wilson. I am estimating their time of migration to Ky between 1880 and 1896 because of the census and land deed records. If Joseph had still been in TN I feel that his mother would have deeded her land to him since he was the oldest surviving son. Mary Angeline Higgins is the sister of Nancy Elizabeth Higgins, wife of Joseph’s brother Sam B. Wilson.

Children of Joseph WILSON and Mary HIGGINS are:
55 i. Martha Dorenda WILSON, born 11 May, 1875 in TN.  She married George FOSTER.
56 ii. Coga Hasin WILSON, born 13 Jan, 1877 in Cannon Co.,TN; died 19 Feb, 1954 in Cedar Hill,TN.  He married Mary “Molly” Ebaline
DAVIS 10 Aug, 1898 in Cannon Co.,TN.  People would come for miles around to hear Coga pray. He would prostrate himself on the floor, arms outstretched, face down and pray  for hours at a time. Mary Davis  is the sister of John B. Davis who married Coga’s sister Laura Novella Wilson.
57 iii. Thomas Allen WILSON  born 16 Apr, 1879 in TN.  He married Lucy Della ROBERTS.
58 iv. Laura Novella WILSON, born 25 Feb, 1881 in TN.  She married John B. DAVIS.
John is the brother of Mary Davis who married married Coga Hassin Wilson, brother of Laura Novella Wilson.
59 v. James Michael WILSON, born 26 Sep, 1883 in TN.  He married (1) Millie SIMMONS.  He married (2) Effie STINSON.
60 vi. Lucinda WILSON, born 17 Oct, 1885 in TN.  She married Lon ATWOOD.
61 vii. Arthur Isaiah WILSON, born 12 Nov, 1887 in TN.  He married Alice Isabelle WILLIS 19 Aug, 1911.
62 viii. Elijah Hatten WILSON born 21 Mar, 1890 in TN; died 23 Jan, 1946 in Scottsville,Allen Co.,Ky.
            He married Fannie BRINLEY.

 11.  Perlina “Palina” Artimischa WILSON (Michael1) was born 27 Jul, 1860 in Cannon Co., TN, and died 11 Jan, 1909 in Cannon Co., TN.  She married Elijah Coleman “Bud” HIGGINS 30 Jul, 1876 in Cannon Co., TN, son of Robert HIGGINS and Susan SULLINS.
Bud Higgins is the grandson of Elijah Higgins who is the father of Nancy Elizabeth Higgins wife of Perlina’s brother Samuel B. Wilson. Bud’s mother Susan Sullins  is the niece of Mary Sullins who bore a child of Elijah’s out of wedlock. Mary was blind and lived with Robert  & Susan Higgins after she gave birth to the child. The daughter, Julia Ann Sullins was raised by Elijah’s second wife Laura Patrick Higgins.
