Obituary of Rev. Thomas Phillips, 1979:
New River native dies at 77. The Rev. Thomas Phillips, 77, of Dutch Valley Rd., Clinton Rt. 2, died at 2:45 a.m. Monday at his home of a heart attack.
He was a retired coal miner, formerly employed in Briceville, and a member of New Haven Baptist Church. A native of the New Rover area, he was the son of the late Eli and Sarah Phillips.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Oma Daugherty Phillips; four sons, Lonnie Phillips of Briceville, Onzie, Ulys and Tommy Ray Phillips of Clinton Rt. 2; four daughters, Mrs. Hazel Buhl of Ashtabula, Ohio, Mrs. Mae Daugherty of South Clinton, Mrs. Litha Kennedy and Mrs. Pearl Daugherty of Clinton Rt. 2; two brothers, Flem and Jonah Phillips of Lake City; five sisters, Mrs. Litha Patterson, Mrs. Della Tindell, Mrs. Judy Phillips and Mrs. Rachel Rhynehart of Lake City and Mrs. Lossie Hensley of LaFollette; 44 grandchildren and 51 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Wednesday at Mountain Assembly Church of God in Lake City with the Rev. Roger Powell officiating. Burial was in New Haven Cemetery in Dutch Valley Community.
