ASHMORE, William Monroe, Public Official; born Jefferson City, Tenn., Aug. 19, 1851; son of Robert Henderson and Mary Elizabeth (Weldon) ASHMORE, Scotch-Irish descent; educated Carson & Newman College; married Mary Virginia HOMER Nov. 30, 1883; member Masons (Oriental, No. _, of Knoxville), K. of P. and I. O. O. F.; City Comptroller of Knoxville, Tenn., 1910-1912; entered business with father at Jefferson City in 1865; in 1874 moved to Knoxville, where he engaged in various mercantile enterprises until 1910, when he retired from active business; member 1st Presbyterian church of Knoxville, Tenn.
