Bobby Barnes, 22, Honor Student At U-T, Succumbs

Bobby Deering Barnes, 22, honor student at the University of Tennessee and a prominent member of McMinnnville’s younger set, died unexpectedly Monday morning at 6 o’clock  (EST) at his apartment, 225 12th St. Knoxville, apparently as a result of a heart attack. Young Barnes, who possessed a brilliant scholastic record at the state university as well as being a leader in various school activities, had not been ill prior to the fatal attack. His brother, Paul Barnes, who shared  the apartment with the deceased youth, was awakened early Monday morning by a noise, apparently his brother’s breathing difficult and rushed him to the University infirmary, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Bobby was to graduate “with honors” from the College of Engineering, U-T, next week and only Saturday had received orders to report in September for a second Lieutenant’s commission in the Air Force.  A native and lifelong resident of McMinnville, young Barnes was born March 11, 1931. He was a son of Lawson H. Barnes and Pauline VanHooser Barnes and was educated in the public schools here, graduating from Central high school in the class of 1949.  While a student at Central, Bobby served as president of his sophomore and senior classes. He was considered an outstanding student by school leaders in all phases of activity. He was a member of the Hi-Y club for three years and served as its president during his senior tern.  He was also a member of the Student Council, the annual staff and a writer for the school paper. In his senior year, young Barnes was the winner of the DAR history medal and in student elections was chosen by his fellow classmates as the “Boy Most Likely To Succeed.”  He also participated in Basketball during his high school years. Bobby enrolled at the university in the fall of 1949 and since that time had consistently been rated a member of the honor roll. As student in the College of Engineering, young Barnes was voted to membership in the Tau Beta Phi, honorary engineering fraternity, and was also Phi Beta Kappa, national hororary scholastic organization.  He was an ROTC student for four years at U-T and held the rank of major in the cadet corps at the time of his death. In McMinnville, Bobby was held in high esteem by a wide circle of friends, both among the younger set and by older citizens of the city who had observed him since the early days of his life. He attended Westwood Church of Christ here. Survivors include his parents and brother. Funeral services for the youth were held Tuesday afternoon at 4 o’clock at Westwood Church of Christ. Stanley J. A. McInery , the minister, officiated and burial was in Mt. View cemetery. Pallbearers were J.C. Myers, Jr., Jack Cantrell, Robert Potter, Harold Durham, Charles Thaxton, Jack Bern, Brown Seals,Jr., J. A. Glenn, of McMinnville, and Jimmy Bradshaw of Hartsville.
