James Dickson’s home, site of Perry County’s first court

The house built by James Dickson in 1818. Besides being the family living quarters the front room was used to convene the first court in Perry county and for a period thereafter. It is said that Andrew Jackson was one of the lawyers to have argued cases here during the time it was being used for court. ….copy of the land grant, signed by the governor, showing James Dickson, being granted ownership of, 170 acres, along Lick Creek, signed on June 11, 1821 … since the Dickson House was built in 1818, I can only assume that James already owned the land where the house is located, and that this grant in 1821, extended his property another 170 acres …
Here is a picture of James Dickson & his wife, Margaret Ann Wilson Dickson ... the Dickson House is visible in the background ...
Henry McKendree (Mack) Ledbetter and his first or second wife with the Dickson House in the background. Mack Ledbetter was a later owner of the Dickson House.

  1. That’s my g,g,g grandfather and gg,g,grandmother Horace Dickson was my grandfather never been able to find much info. On him.

  2. James Dickson was my 3rd Great Grandfather on both my Mother’s side and my Father’s side. Although the house is the James Dickson house, the picture is unfortunately not James and Margaret Ann Wilson Dickson. The house was later acquired by Henry Mckendree Ledbetter. The man and woman in the picture are My 2nd Great Uncle Henry McKendree (Mack) Ledbetter and his first or second wife. His first wife was Mary E. vaughan and after her death in 1895, he married Nancy Shannon. This picture is also in the 1820 to 1995 History and Families of Perry County, Tennesse on page 205.
