During his life time, David researched the history of several Decatur and Henderson County families. His research provides important basic research on the history of families that now live or have lived in these two counties. Like all research, it is not perfect and is known to contain both errors and omissions. Jesse[1] Moore. Born, circa 1785. Died, 13 Jul 1841, in Decatur Co., TN. Burial in Moore Cem., Perry Co., TN (fieldstone). Occupation: Blacksmith. Jesse Moore is believed to be son of Revolutionary War veteran Thomas Moore of White County. Jesse Moore lived in North Carolina until 1812 (based on place of birth for daughter Agnes in 1850 census). He then moved first to the Caney Fork River in White County, Tennessee (possibly south of the river in what is now Van Buren County). In the 1820 the Jesse Moore family followed the other Denton family groups to settle on Cedar Creek area of Perry County, Tennessee. Jesse Moore lived near the confluence of Swindell Creek and Cedar Creek. Jesse Moore was a blacksmith and ran a livery stable, and his surviving papers show numerous dealings with the Cedar Grove furnace. In 1840, using money borrowed from son-in-law John Horner, Jesse Moore purchased from Louis Outlaw two adjoining tracts of land on the south side of Beech River in what is now Decatur County. The Moore family still owned this land in 1994.
He married Margaret (Peggy) Denton, daughter of Abraham Denton and Mourning Hogg. Born, circa 1790. Died, 25 Oct 1858, in Decatur Co., TN. Burial in Moore Cem., Perry Co., TN (fieldstone). Children:

Nancy[2] Moore (Jesse, 1). Born, circa 1816. Died, 18 Oct 1858.
She married John Myracle, son of Jacob Myracle and Catherine Long. Born, 24 Jan 1813, in Warren Co., TN. Census: 1870, in Decatur Co., TN. Census: 1880, in Salem Township, Dunklin Co., MO. Occupation: Farmer. John Myracle is listed in the census of 1850 in Mississippi Co., Arkansas, though he must have moved very shortly thereafter to Missouri. His children born after 1850 (listed in the census of 1870 in Decatur County, Tennessee) have Missouri given as their birth place. Two the families of John's brothers also moved to Dunklin County, Missouri, as did the families of two of his wife's sisters. He is listed in the 1880 census of Dunklin County, Missouri. John Myracle sold a tract of land on the Beech River in Decatur County to his brother Perry on January 29, 1850, so this may be the time of his move. He sold a second tract of land to Perry on October 25, 1856. John Myracle and his daughters moved back to Decatur County after the Civil War and are listed in the census of 1870. The last record of him in Decatur County is the warranty deed issued when the heirs of Nancy Myracle sold their one-fifth interest in the estate of Jesse Moore to Leroy P. Moore (including a second one-fifth interest which John had purchased from the heirs of Serena Horner). Children:

She married James Lomax, son of John W. Lomax and Elizabeth Horner. Born, 26 Dec 1818. Died, 30 Nov 1892, in Garrett Com., Decatur Co., TN. Burial in New Hope Cem., Decatur Co., TN. Occupation: Farmer. James Lomax was born in the Cedar Creek area of Perry County. He seems to have moved west of the Tennessee River to manage the property just purchased by his father-in-law Jesse Moore following Jesse Moore's death. James Lomax lived on the Jesse Moore property (currently the Roy Moore farm) for many years. James's wife and later James had a one-fifth interest in the property. James seems to had the controlling interest in the property, blocking an apparent attempt by John Myracle, owner of a two-fifths interest, to gain control of the property. James Lomax probably ensured that the property remained in the Moore family. After James himself moved elsewhere, one of his sons and later a daughter lived on the Moore farm. James Lomax was a charter member of the first and second organizations of New Hope Baptist Church and served as a deacon there for many years. On September 27, 1886, he became a charter member of the Liberty Wheel, a branch of a farmer's educational and political organization. Children:

He was laid to rest Wednesday afternoor in the Campground cemetery in the presence of a large number of weeping relatives and friends. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Boren of Darden." Elsewhere in the issue is a note that "Mr. J. H. Chalk and wife, Mr. Chess Myracle and wife and Mrs. J. A. Chalk attended the burial of Leslie Moore, at Campground, Wednesday."

"'He would pass out when he was working in the field,' recalled Mr. lomax's son Willie. 'We really didn't think he would live very long.' "Mr. Lomax certainly proved everyone wrong because Monday [January 14, 1991] he celebrated his 102 birthday. There was a party that included a big cake decorated with bright red roses. "The party was at Alvis and Melvie Lomax's home in the Crawford Community near Decaturville, where Mr. Lomax lives. "Guests included nurses and aides from Parsons Home Health Care. They brought food, gifts, and warm birthday greetings because Mr. Lomax is their oldest patient. "'When someone lives to be 102, they deserve a party,' noted Janice Wyatt, PHHC registered nurse. "Wyatt says for Mr. Lomax's age, he is in really excellent health. Health problems include poor circulation in his legs, high blood pressure and a little arthritis. "Mr. Lomax says he can't tell that being 102 causes a lot of daily problems, except for it being a little harder to get out of a chair. "'Sometimes it takes me a try or two before I can get up and then I have to stand still for a minute before I can walk.' "What kind of advice does Mr. Lomax have for people wanting to live long enough to become a centurian [centenarian]? "'I got none 'cause I'm not old,' asserted Mr. Lomax with a broad smile and eyes twinkling with Mischief. "Mr. Alvis says he and his father are closer today than when he was a young boy. "'Pappy is more like our friend now,' explained Mr. Alvis, who is 73-years-old. Mr. Willie is 77-years-old. "Mr. Lomax has always been a storyteller. 'When he was young he did the talking and everyone else listened when he started telling about the good old days,' said Mr. Alvis. "Since he was born in 1889, Mr. Lomax has seen the world change from riding horses and mules to space travel. He loves to tell about the first car he ever saw. Mr. Lomax and a friend were riding their mules to town and while they had stopped at Brooksie Branch to let the mules get a drink of water, a car drove by. "'It scared the mules to death,' reminisced Mr. Lomax. 'Dr. Rogers had the first car.' "He remembers getting electricity in his home and the first telephone. 'You used to have to talk to the operator to get anybody,' explained Mr. Lomax. "Mr. Lomax was born in the Crawford community, not far from where he lives today. "His wife, the former Clara Williams, died last year. Mr. Lomax family includes 3 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren. "Mr. Willie and Mr. Alvis say their father always worked hard. 'We think the Lord has really blessed our family,' added Mr. Willie. "Mr. Lomax says he doesn't have a recipe to tell people how to live over 100 years. "'You just do it,' proclaimed Mr. Lomax. 'I've had a pretty good time doing it, too.'"
