Orton Family File

Joseph Orton
Born 12 March 1770
Rowan County, North Carolina

Joseph Orton married Mary Bryan 6 Nov 1810 in Davidson County, Tennessee

In 1813/14, Joseph Orton, his brother Samuel Orton and David Pinkerton, who was married to the Orton brother’s first cousin, Jennie Bryan, enlisted together in Col. John Cocke’s Company of the 2nd Tennessee Militia and subsequently fought in the Battle of New Orleans.

Joseph Orton is head of household on the Williamson County census of 1820; he lived/owned land in the area of Donaldson’s Creek, very near the Williamson-Davidson County line.

“Survey and Entry Book, Williamson Co TN, 1824-1902”, Louise Gillespie Lynch:

p. 34, “Nicholas Perkins, Jr., Entry 5, 5 Jul 1824, 536 acres lying on the ridge dividing the waters ofthe Big Harpeth from the south, beginning near a branch that runs into Donaldson’s Creek to Samuel Bryan’s 25 acre tract – Joseph Orton’s 25 acre survey, Mairse’s 640 acre tract now owned by John David, 640 acre tract entered by Thomas H. Perkins in the name of Burks Litterals survey.”

p. 43, “Joseph Orton, Entry 99, 2 Aug 1824, 60 acres on the waters of Donaldson’s creek bounded by Samuel Bryant’s 20 acre tract.”

p. 43, “Joseph Orton, Entry 100, 2 Aug 1824, 60 acres on the waters of Donaldson’s Creek bounded by Samuel Bryant’s 20 acre tract.”

p. 67, “Joseph Orton, entry 497, 21 Oct 1826, 6 1/4 acres on the head waters of Donaldson Creek, bounded by Samuel Bryant’s 20 acre survey conveyed to said Orton, John Donaldson’s land sold to Nicholas Perkins, Jr.” [this entry indicates Samuel Bryan had given land to Joseph Orton and his wife, Mary, Samuel’s daughter]

[Some time after 1835, Joseph Orton/Orten took his entire family to Illinois.]
