SIMMONS, James Monroe, newspaper man; born Fayette Co., Tenn., June 25, 1861; English descent; son of John H. and Olivia F. (Harris) SIMMONS; father’s occupation, farmer; paternal grandfather W. D. SIMMONS, maternal grandfather Thomas H. HARRIS; educated at Southwestern Baptist University, Jackson, Tenn., and graduated Commercial College, Keokuk, Iowa, July 2, 1881; in early life entered the newspaper business; married Anna D. DUKE Oct. 21, 1884; member Knights of Pythias, Jackson Lodge No. 45, F. & A. M., Woodmen of the World, Head Consul Manager, also Past Chancellor and Representative to Grand Lodge K. of P.; former Alderman 4th Ward Jackson, Tenn., June, 1898-1900, and Mayor pro tem., Trustee of Jackson Free Library, Director and Vice-Pres. of Jackson Y. M. C. A.; formerly half owner of Jackson Daily Whig and later half owner of Jackson Daily Sun; founded Daily Democrat Sept. 27, 1910; director in the W. F. Lamb Piano Co., Jackson, Tenn.; Democrat; member 1st Baptist church and Superintendent of Sunday school twelve years, Jackson, Tenn.
