SHEARER, John Manuel, business man; Justice of the Peace and Notary Public; born Valley River, N. C., Sept. 12, 1841; English and French descent; great grandfather served in revolutionary war and witnessed the surrender of Cornwallis; son of Whey Kimbell and Catherine (Ramsey) SHEARER; received common school education; married Nancy E. BRADLEY Dec. 27, 1867; member of Masonic Lodge; has been J. P. for sixteen years and Notary Public for eighteen years; was private in Company B, 7th Tenn. Mounted Infantry Volunteers; promoted to Color Sergeant of Regiment; was Tax Collector in Cherokee, N. C., in Shoal Creek Township, N. C., before moving to Tenn.; formerly engaged in farming, but now devotes himself to official business; member of the Baptist church.
