GAW, Roscoe C., public official; born near Gainesboro, Jackson, Co., Tenn., July 6, 1882; Scotch-Irish descent; son of Armel and Clarissa (Purcell) GAW; father’s occupation, farmer; paternal grandparents Elias and Jane GAW; educated in the common schools Jackson Co., Tenn.; at the age of fifteen began teaching public schools Jackson Co., Tenn., and continued in this profession until 1903, when he began the study of law in the office of Congressman Cordell HULL and John J. GORE surveyor of customs for the port of Nashville, when he was elected to the office of Circuit Court Clerk of Jackson Co., Tenn., in 1906; reelected Circuit Court Clerk Aug. 1, 1910; member of Tanney Hill Lodge No. 133 F. & A. M. and is W. M. of said Lodge; also Gainesboro Lodge No. 234 I. O. O. F. and treasurer of same, and M. W. of A., Rock Island, Ill.; Democrat; member of the Church of Christ; member Quarles Sadler Dry goods Co., Gainesboro, Tenn.
