GALLOWAY, Jacob Scudder, lawyer; born near Morristown, N. J., Feb. 14, 1838; Scotch-Irish and English descent; son of Samuel and Rebecca (Scudder) GALLOWAY; father’s occupation, Presbyterian minister; paternal grandparents, Joseph and Mary (Bowman) GALLOWAY, maternal grandparents, Dr. Jacob and Hester Rule (McClain) SCUDDER; graduated from Princeton University, N. J., A. B. 1858, A. M., 1861; began his business career as a school teacher; member of Co. “A” 4th Tenn. infantry regiment C. S. A. and participated in famous charge on McAllister’s battery Shiloh, Tenn., was wounded in that charge; attained the rank of First Lieutenant; married twice, first Mary Eliza TUCKER, May 14, 1867, second Mrs. Sarah (Tucker) COFFEE, Nov. 12, 1879; member Masons and Elks; Democrat; Justice of the Peace 1876-86; State Senator, 1883-85; Judge of the 2d Circuit Court Shelby Co., 1893-1905; Judge of the Probate Court from 1886 to present time; affiliates with Episcopal church.
