ELY, John Anderson, cotton factor; born Vaiden, Miss., Dec. 9, 1870; English Scotch-Irish descent; son of Richard A. and Mary Frances (Anderson) ELY; father’s occupation planter; paternal grandparents, Thomas and Mary (Madden) ELY,  maternal grandparents, Joel and Frances (Maddox) ANDERSON; educated in city schools of Vaiden, Miss., and  A. M. College, Starkville, Miss.; began his career as clerk in U. S. Engineer’s office in Memphis, Tenn.; married Sadie CANNON, Oct. 27, 1897; member Chickasaw Club; Democrat; member firm Lesser-Ely Cotton Co., cotton factors and Humphreys Cannon & Co., coffee importers, Memphis Tenn.; member Baptist church.
