CLIFT, Moses H., attorney; born at Soddy, Hamilton County Tenn., Aug. 25, 1836; son of William and Nancy (Brooks) CLIFT; English, Scotch and Irish descent; married Florence PARROTT Jun 27, 1883; is a Mason (Knight Templar); was a major in the Confederate Army, serving first on the staff of Col. Jas. STARNES, commanding brigade, and after the death of Col. STARNES on Gen. Geo. DIBRELL’s staff, who succeeded Col. STARNES as commander of FORREST’s old brigade; was slightly wounded in the second battle at Fort Donaldson, 23 bullets having passed through his clothes in this engagement; was at the battle of Parker’s Cross-roads and several other engagements in West Tenn. With FORREST’s command in the winter of 1862 and 1863; at the battle of Thompson’s Station, Chickamauga, Knoxville, with LONGSTREET, and numerous engagements during the occupancy of East Tenn. during the winter of 1864; and in the various engagements of Johnson’s Army from Dalton to Atlanta; was with Gen. WHEELER’s command in the raid from Atlanta by way of Knoxville into Middle Tenn. and Ala. in the fall of 1864 and again with FORREST and was with FORREST’s command at Athens, Ala., Sulphor TRUSSELL and other engagements on this raid, then with WHEELER’s command after SHERMAN resisted his march through Georgia, North and South Carolina and saw SHERMAN’s army burning Columbia, S. C.; was in the battle of Bentonville, N. C., where he was promoted to the rank of Colonel on Gen. DIBRELL’s staff, who commanded DAVIS’ Escort from Greensboro, N. C., to Washington, Ga., was with Gen. DIBRELL at the last two meeting of the cabinet held; was with the command when it surrendered at Washington, Ga.; resumed the practice of law at Chattanooga, Tenn., 1865.
