BATES, William Horatio, printer; born in Henry Co., Iowa, Oct. 24, 1841; son of Daniel and Sarah (Lavender) BATES; father’s occupation, editor; paternal grandfather; William BATES; maternal grandfather, William LAVENDER; both grandfathers native Virginians and served honorably through entire Revolutionary war; educated in private school; began his business career in printing offices, is now persident [sic] S.C. Toof & Co., printers and lithographers, and has been in printing business in Memphis, Tenn., for over 45 years; married Mary BORCHERDT, Oct. 31, 1871; member DeSoto Lodge Masons, Scottish Rite bodies, Tennessee Club, Memphis Country Club, and Waponoca Outing Club, Democrat; member of City Council of Memphis, 1878-79; chairman Memphis Artesian Water department for four years when the company was first bought by the city; member of Linden Avenue Christian church, Memphis, Tenn.
