BALTHIOP, John H., retired merchant; born Robertson Co., Tenn., Aug. 18, 1841; Irish and English descent; son of John C. and Nancy A. (White) BALTHIOP; paternal grandparents Frank and ____(Gardner) BALTHIOP; maternal grandparents John H. and ____ (Bell) WHITE; received common school education; reared on a farm and jointed the Confederate army Jan. 1862; rank of 3d Sergeant; was captured at Ft. Donaldson Feb. 16, 1862; carried to Camp Douglas prison; exchanged Sept. 1862 as prisoner of war; lost right leg in battle of Peachtree Creek, Ga., July 20, 1864; returned home in May 1865; began his business career as school teacher; later became interested in mercantile business; married Mary J. GUPTON Jan. 29, 1880; Independent in politics; former fourth class Postmaster.
