HUMPHREYS, Hugh, merchant, born in Shelby Co., Feb. 17, 1876; Protestant-Irish descent; son of James Henry and Ann Eliza (Ward) HUMPHREYS; father’s occupation, civil engineer; received common school education; began his business career as an office boy, later became stenographer and bookkeeper; then established the firm of Humphreys, Godwin Co., of which he is now president; also stockholder in various banks and enterprise; married Flournoy SELDEN, in New York on Jan. 7, 1904; member Memphis Merchants Exchange and Chickasaw Club; independent in politics.
