DAVIS, William C., chief of police, city of Memphis; born Covington, Tipton County, Tenn., March 25, 1843; son L. W. and Margaret C. (Freeman) DAVIS; educated Covington, Tipton County, Tenn.; married Nannie H. SULLIVAN, March 15, 1866; member Ancient Order United Workmen, Knights of Honor; Democrat; served four years in Confederate Army; promoted from a private to Lieutenant by order of Gen. N. B. FORREST at battle of Franklin, Tenn., for gallantry displayed in a charge upon the enemy’s works; was appointed upon the police department January, 1870, as a patrolman; afterward stationhouse keeper; was promoted to Captain and served until 1880, when he was appointed Chief of Police and has served in his present position under every head of the city government since, except three.
