 James Hornbeak b. 1770 d. 1845 and wife Sarah Dean Johnson Hornbeak b. 1778 d. 1840. Hornbeak Cemetery

James Hornbeak born in Granville County, North Carolina. Settled in Shafter May 1811 [area of Weakley County where Hornbeak Cem is located] Received this land & 300 acres for services in the Indian Wars. Donated this site for Hornbeak Cemetery. First to be buried here.

Remarks from April 12, 1939....James Hornbeak first buried here in 1849. Sarah Dean Hornbeak also buried here. Billie Newberry, Confederate Soldier buried here.  David Crockett helped build first house on this ground which was traded from Indians.
