James Monroe DUNNING -  Union  Soldier



 
 
 

James Monroe Dunning was born in Weakley County, Tennessee according to the census of 1850.   In the 1850 census he was living with his  parents, John and Sally Dunning along with his sister Harriett and his  brother George in District 12.   According to pension records from the  National Archives he enlisted February 1, 1864 and served as a private and a corporal in Co."M" 6th Reg't Tennesse Calvary (Union army) at North Gibson    He mustered in as Private at Memphis.   He was  discharged on July 26, 1865, mustered out at Pulaski, Tn.  . James then married Emily Jane Cochran that  same year in Graves County, Kentucky.   They then lived in the Mayfield area of Kentucky before moving to White Water Station, Missouri.   In the  1880 census James states that he suffers from chills and fever and his  occupation was farming.   He died in 1884 at the age of 40 and is buried at White Water Station, Missouri.   Emily and the children then moved to the Christmasville area of Carroll County, Tennessee. Emily's application for pension stated he contacted disease in service of his country.  Cause of Death: Heart disease or Catarhlal fever.
