The
Leviathan in 1917
The Leviathan, a former German ship, was seized by the U.S. in 1917. By early 1918 she had undergone repairs and had been repainted with a "dazzle" camouflage scheme. It made regular passage between the U. S. and Brest, France, delivering up to 14,000 soldiers each trip, carrying over 119,000 fighting men before the Armistice November 11, 1918. Repainted grey, the Leviathan then reversed the flow of men back to the United States with nine westard crossings ending September 8, 1919. |
