Alexander W. SPROUT Died Sept 30, 1851 Aged 57 yrs - 7 mos - 16 days "Blessed are the dead who are in (with) the Lord" |
Note from Garry
Brown: Steve Maupin and I discovered this tombstone buried under leaves and plant decay in a very old and abandoned cemetery a couple of years ago. The cemetery is the Doran Cemetery, north of the North Fork of The Obion River, in District 1. The stone was face down. When we raised it, we were amazed at how good its condition was. It looked as though it had recently been placed in the cemetery. The cemetery was canvassed by the DAR group in 1979 or so and this stone wasn’t reported. The most recent burial they noted was in 1901. I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that the stone had been buried since the 1890’s or even earlier. Alexander Sprout was a first generation settler of Weakley Co. I believe he was the namesake of Sprout’s levee which may have been the first road crossing the Obion bottoms in Weakley Co in the late 1820’s. |
