Revolutionary War Veterans

Weakley County Tennessee

Peter WILLIAMS

***

Peter Williams, my 4th grandfather, was a Revolutionary War soldier who lived and probably died in Weakley County, Tennessee.  Our father, Martin Fire Chief Buster Williams collected info on Sergeant Peter Williams. Peter, the son of of Oliver Williams, was born in North Carolina about 1765. He was a private in Moore's Company, 1st North Carolina Battalion as of June 30, 1777. He was mustered out as a sergeant in 1782. For 84 months' service, he received a soldier's warrant for 1,000 acres, which he apparently took in Wilson County, now in Tennessee. He had married Mary Austin about 1809 in Orange County, North Carolina. Their son Allen Williams (1786-1875) served in the Tennessee militia in the War of 1812 and received a soldier's warrant for land he took in northeast Weakley County. Either he joined his father in Weakley County or vice versa. Peter and Allen, who married Elizabeth Davis, lived near each other in the Boydsville vicinity. Peter, an early county official, died sometime between the censuses of 1850 and 1860. Allen and Elizabeth (1792-1889) are buried in the Williams Cemetery on Old Boydsville Road, and we are speculating that Peter is buried there, too, although my sister, Linda Williams Waymon, and I found no marker as yet.

My father was the son of Neville Brandon Williams, Sr. His parents were Willis L. Williams, Jr. ("Dow") and Lula Bette Ivey (Ivie). Willis L. Williams, Sr., was the son of Allen Williams, son of Peter.
