We find no better way to tell a part of his story than, in his own words found in his application for a pension in Weakley Co., TN, 1832. John Welch says, "I enlisted for the term of eighteen months when I lived in Virginia under Captain Dixon I think in the month of January but I do not recollect in what date we marched out on the frontiers of Kentucky and was stationed at a place called Ric----? on Clinch river Waters where we remained until we were marched to Long Island on Holston where we remained until a treaty was made with the Indians of the Cherokee Tribe after which time I received a discharge and went home. I was next called out in the Militia Service and was stationed at New London to Guard the Magazine in the County of Bedford where I remained until my time of service expired and I received a discharge and returned home again. I was next called into service in the Militia under Capt. Gilbert to go to Portsmouth and marched to rendezvous at Holts Store there we received news that the British had left Portsmouth and we were discharged again. I was next called into service under Capt. Adams and marched to Long Island on Stanton River where I remained for some time. I was the discharged for want of guns there not being guns enough for all the men there. I was next called into service to march against Cornwallace while he was at Little York and I hired a substitute to go in my place. I was in no engagements during the war but I should have been in the Battle of Guilford if I could have had a gun there was a number discharged at the same time I was at Long Island on Stanton River when the soldiers marched against the British at Guilford Court House for want of guns."
