New Salem School
abt 1914


Built about 1914, New Salem School was built across the street from the New Salem Church.  This school went through the 10th grade and the teachers for the first year - 1914-1915 were 

Will ESTES
Allie CUNNINGHAME
Willie MARCUM taught music

During the 1915 - 1916 school year, Fred ESTES took Will ESTES position and he introduced basketball at the shcool.  

Beginining in school year 1916 - 1917 through the next 4 years the New Salem Basketball team lost only one game, that to Palmersville.  Some of the start players were Tom Mac WASH, M. F. RIGGS, Colye SPEIGHT, Dick GREEN, Carmen SPEIEGHT.

Some of the other early teachers were Evie WASH, Freeman Earnest KILLEBREW, Ailene TAYLOR, Andy LACKEY and Mrs. M. F. RIGGS.  The school was reduced to 8 grades about 1925.  The school closed after the school year 1949-50.  The last teacher was Mrs. Lottie FISHER.  The New Salem School was purchased by the members of the New Salem Community.
