David Lawson GATEWOOD, Union  Soldier


Buried in Palmersville Cem., Palmersville, Weakley Co., Tn. died at age 33 from gunshot wound by a man from whom he was trying to collect a debt.

David served with the Union Army during the Civil War with Co A, Co I, 6th Regiment of Cav. The unit was organized at Bethel, McNairy County in Aug 1862.  6 Companies mustered in Nov 1862, 2 Companies Mar 1863, 4 Companies mustered in Jul 1863.  Mustered out on Jul 26, 1865.  The Captains of Co, A were Robert M. Thompson, Barney J. Riggs, Samuel Towls. 

Enlisted as a Private on 23Aug1862 and was discharged 26Jun1865 and at the time of enlistment his occupation was farmer. He was listed as stout and healthy, about 5 ft and some inches tall, had blue eyes and black hair and that his name was David Lawson Gatewood.[Gatewood1.FTW]
