Stark, Thomas Calvin, b. 2/11/1813; Company A, Eighth Arkansas Cavalry; He enlisted in the Confederate Army on June 24, 1862. He died as a prisoner of war of the Union Army at De Valls Bluff on the White River in Arkansas.  While in the Army, he came home on furlough. While he was there a roving band of men came riding up to the house.  Because he had a farm of some 1300 acres and good hourses, they thought he must  heave gold somewhere. They tried to force him to tell them where he had hidden his money. They took him to the barn, put the noose of a rope around his neck, threw the other end over the barnn's rafter, and pulled, choking him to reveal where he ahd hidden money. When this method  failed, they put his bare feet to live coals of fire. His  wife finally convinced them that he had nothing to tell. Then Union Soldiers came riding through and found him at home. They too him as a prosoner of war to the prison camp at Devall's Bluff on white river. There the prisoners were made to dig dithches in extremely cold weather. He complained of being sick, but they thought he was trying to get out of werk and kept him working. A Noble Deed
Of the Late Haywood Thomas of McKenzie, Tenn.
The following circumstances was told to the undersigned by the above late Haywood Thomas after the civil war.  At the battle of Shilo he and his brother, Mat Thomas, were fighting side by side when his brother Mat was shot down mortally wounded.  Just at that time the Confederate army was ordered to retreat.  He stood by his brother weltering in blood, and as the Federal troops in their pursuit of the Confederates passed him he told them he would be taken prisoner rather than leave his brother in the condition he then was.  The Federals past on and did not molest him.  He remained with his brother, until he died.  He then dug a grave, wrapped his brother in a blanket and rolled him into it and buried him.   He remained in the Federal camp about two weeks unmolested, enjoyed the freedom of the camp and ate with the soldiers.  During the time there was a wounded horse in the camp.  He took the horse and doctored it.  The horse improved and one day he saddled the horse and put on a blue Federal overcoat, and got on the horse to take a ride to the pickets, but he never found any, and he continued to ride till he reached home in Carroll county, Tenn.  After resting a while he returned to the Confederate army.
