While eating they were surprised by a company of Federals, commanded by Sam Johnson. Four of these brave Confederates were killed. The others escaped. Her stone is one of the oldest in Cates and is in the front right of the cemetery as you are facing it from the road. In 8/1862, enlisted in the Wyatt County, AR regiment for the Confederate Army. His commanding officer was Col. Shouers. He was paroled as a POW on 3/5/1865. Returned to TN from AR in 1865. Had lost the sight of right eye completely. Ben McCulloch was made a Brigadier General by Jeff DAvis in the Confederate Army. He was killed in the Battle of Pea Ridge, Arkansas. Co.H Capt.; His life was one of strong conflicts and stronger feelings. In 1861, as a Captain in the Confederate Army, under Gen. Beauregard, he was present at the surrender of Fort Sumter. He was also Captain in the Cherokee Ponds Guards 1861-1862 (S.C.). It was also his sad duty to command as a Major in the 6th Battalion of Reserves (Meriwethers Battalion, S.C.) when it surrendered at Albany, Ga., May 10, 1865, bringing to a close his highly individualistic career as a Confederate and as an American. So incensed and embittered was he at the turn of events that with his family he emigrated to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Because of the difficulty with the pronounciation of the letter r in Meriwether, the name has been lost and they use a form more suitable to the Portuguese tongue. After an extended stay in Brazil, he returned to Edgfield County, S.C. in his later years, for a visit. He returned to Brazil to live out his life.
