Shadric Toliver CAUDLE
son of William G. CAUDLE

from  the Greenfield area of Weakley County

Shadric Toliver CAUDLE   was born June 7, 1837 in Marshall Co, TN, and died May 21, 1931 in Combs, Madison Co, AR.  He married MARY ELIZABETH COVINGTON Abt. 1855.  She was born 1840, and died Bef. 1880 in Tennessee.

Shade was in Confederate Army, listed as S.T. Caudle, 31st TN Inf, Co A under Thomas Campbell.  He was discharged in Greenfield, Weakley Co, TN.

Shadric was son of William G. Caudle (1797-1854) and Hannah H. (Davis) Caudle (1800-1881).

Caudle, S.T. (Shade Toliver) 7 June 1837 22 -  May 1931  Gone But Not Forgotton

NOTE:  The following information was supplied by Faye PATRICK Calico, his maternal great granddaughter.

Grandpa Caudle was a Confederate Army veteran.  He served from 1861 to 11 May 1865 in the 31 Tenn Infantry, C.S.A. under Thomas Campbell, Commander.  He was discharged by the Commander of Camp #972 in Greenfield, Weakley Co, Tenn.  He brought his family to Madison County, Arkansas sometime between the years 1883 & 1889 and settled on Caudle Mountain.  This time period is determined by the births of son Henrys children - - daughter Manie Fermelia born in Tennessee 13 Sept 1885 & the next child, a son Vergie Sylvester born 18 Dec 1889 in Arkansas.  He applied for pension #10472 in July of 1902 from Arkansas which was signed by William H. Brashears, J.P.  John S. Combs gave a statement as did Dr. W.P. Dabney who listed Shades disabilities as gunshot wound in left thigh in front and on upper part of mussel and also hernia in left groin __?__ to first.   Also the ring finger of left hand [is missing] & am of the opinion that his pensionable disability are all equal to the loss of a hand or a foot & consider the applicants disabilities entitles him to at least a two thirds rating.  This statement was signed also by County Clerk Earl Stroud.  His pension was approved 15 Aug 1902 and he was allowed $75.00.

Grandpa Caudle was born in Marshall County, Tenn.  I havent learned yet who his parents were.  About 1855, he married Mary Elizabeth COVINGTON probably in Weakley County, Tenn.  They had 6 children that I know of, all of whom came with their father to Ark. after Marys death.  It is possible that others were born in the years between Martha born in 1856 and Henry Elijah Jackson Caudle born in 1861 who did not make the trip to Madison County.  Martha never married, although she had a daughter, Melissa, born before they left Tenn.  The other children were James Columbus born in 1866, my grandmother Mary Elizabeth b 1869 who later married Virgil A. Combs, Sallie b in 1873 and Alex Edgar b 1875.

NOTE:  The following article from 21 June 1928 Springdale News stated Shade Caudle of Combs in Madison County was the guest of Mr & Mrs Dave Dodson of Springdale Sunday, being a cousin of Mrs Dodson.  Mr Caudle was 91 yrs old Thurs of last week and is said to be the oldest person in Madison County.  He retains all his mental faculties and his physical condition is remarkable for one of his age.  He gives promise of reaching the century mark.

An item in the Madison County Record, dated 5 Sept 1929 said Among the Court attendants Monday, we were greatly pleased to meet our old friend Shade Caudle of Combs.  Mr Caudle, who is one of the few surviving Confederate veterans in Madison County, is in his 93rd year, but you wouldnt know he is that old if he didnt tell you.  He has about fully recovered from the injury of one of his shoulders which he sustained in a fall a few months ago.

The above article was taken from Madison Co. Musings, Volume XIV, SPRING 1995, No. Ps 78-80.  UW Historical Library, Madison, WI.
