THE OLD MERIDIAN OAK
By Reverand William M. “Bill” Gilliam born 1879

In the old Meridian church yard, stands
An old oak tree with outstretched hands,
There it has stood for hundreds of years,
Braving the storms of the years, without fears.
A monument to many generations of folks,
Who have rested themselves there, with hope.
Towering above all other church yard trees,
Carrying the burdens of many years with ease,
Reaching its branches in every direction,
On the hill like fatherly arms of protection.

Just north of the tree runs the highway,
There the road has run since pioneer days
The road over which many generations have trod;
In their journey to the house of God.
The old road has helped to and from work,
Wagon loads of men, woman and children, alert,
Its use not only through the days of the week,
But led to the church, the Sabbath day to keep.
Near the mighty oak the road has run;
Along which children have played, had their fun
Children grown to maturity have passed-away.
