The 1932-33 Greenfield High School
Yellowjacket Football Teams

The schedule for the 1932 Greenfield Football team was against teams of towns with much greater size in most instances.  Greenfield defeated Mayfield KY 38 to 0 in their 5th game of that year and the previous week Mayfield had defeated Paducah by more than 30 to 0.

In 1932, the first seven games they were not scored on and were only scored on 6 points each in the final 3 games.  The 1932 and 33 teams combined were only scored on in 5 games.

Mr. Ernest (Brother) Mullins was a member of the team.  He was granted a scholarship to UT Knoxville but says he got homesick and returned to West Tennessee and played 4 years for Union University on a scholarship.

The only loss that year was to Milan in the last game.  Mr. Earnest Mullins relates the following incidents in the final game of that year against Milan:

It was a miserable day with freezing rain.  The field had no sod and was a sea of slush.  Mr. Mullins played end and early in the game an end around play was called.  He states that he was wide open and there was no opposing player within several yards of him and it was a certain touchdown when his feet slipped out from under him and he fell.  He relates that if he had slowed down he could have walked across for a touchdown.

The only score of the game came on a blocked punt by Milan that went behind the gold line where Milan recovered for a touchdown.

The previous week Greenfield and Byers Hall of Covington were the only undefeated teams in West Tennessee.  Greenfield won that game by a score of 13 to 6, thereby claiming the championship for that year even with the loss to Milan.
